Gaming Diary: Playing Mass Effect Andromeda My Way

May 1, 2017 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Mass Effect Andromeda

It’s flooring me how much of a different experience I’m having with Mass Effect Andromeda this time around, playing for myself and not on a deadline. For starters, I can REALLY avoid the story as much as possible. When you just focus on roaming all over the new worlds and making them better for all living there, it’s rather enjoyable. Well, it is until you reach a game-breaking bug (happened twice over the weekend) or you see a really awful character animation, but you know that’s a risk as you go in. As you bond with the characters (that’s still 20 hours in, take note) and learn more about the galaxy from side quests, it becomes the open world Mass Effect game you’ve always wanted.

All you have to do is procrastinate on the story missions as much as possible.

In addition, I’m not nearly as frustrated with playing because taking my time to do literally all of the side quests has leveled me up considerably. At 40 hours in, I’m nearly level 50. When I played the game for review, at 40 hours in I just turned 30. It’s amazing (not amazing) how much easier grinding through the story missions, or even any mission, is when you are properly leveled. Since you can’t save your game mid-mission, and the checkpoints are far and few between, I spent most of my review overly frustrated. Like any RPG, if you take the time grind, most of the game will be a cake-walk except on the hardest difficulties. This time around, I’m having far more fun completing the main missions because I’m not dying every three steps.

It’s also nice to be able to take the time to make the planets habitable and create outposts. No time to do that before. For the first time, I really feel like I’m settling the Heleus Cluster and making a real difference for the Nexus and the galaxy.

This makes me even happier to have walked away from games writing. Who knows what other games I might have enjoyed significantly more if I wasn’t pressed to complete them in a matter of days?

Unboxing the Mass Effect: Andromeda Collector’s Edition Strategy Guide

March 28, 2017 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

The Mass Effect: Andromeda Collector’s Edition strategy guide arrived today, one week after the game’s release, but it is definitely worth the wait. I’m happy I bought it even though I didn’t enjoy the game very much. For starters, I love strategy guides (duh) and secondly, backpacks are cool. Can’t have too many backpacks. You can have too many purses, but too many backpacks? Please.

And thus I have it, and I am rather pleased with it. Super thankful for my Amazon Prime discount, though, because I don’t believe the Pathfinder Edition is entirely worth $130. Watch the video for yourself to see why!

And now it is time for me to roll a new character and play the way I WANT to play. I think I’m gonna like this strategy guide-only thing with video games.

Gaming Diary: Mass Effect Andromeda Week

March 21, 2017 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

Last week, I was buried face down in reviewing Mass Effect Andromeda for PlayStation Lifestyle. Being the huge Mass Effect fan that I am, I was overjoyed to get my hands on this big title and be responsible for reviewing it. My expectations were rather high as a fan, and I know I wasn’t alone. I did constantly tell myself that this is a new chapter in this universe, and it could be a slow start and a bit rough. I wasn’t prepared for the technical mess that it was, and really, I could have overlooked it if the plot wasn’t so cliche, the writing wasn’t cheesy and lazy, and the pacing wasn’t so bad.

That’s all I’m really going to say about it here, but you can read my full review on PSLS.

The week I was reviewing it happened to be Spring Break, and my kids were gone all week with my in-laws. They offered to take them on a road trip all week, the dear hearts. The review code came down the day before the kids left, which made it perfect timing. Now I had all week to play this game to my heart’s content. I didn’t have to worry about picking them up from school, taking them to after-school activities, getting homework done, cooking dinner, any of the normal parenting stuff. The husband even said he would take care of dinner so I wouldn’t have to stress about it. I still had other work to do, since I own a couple of businesses that have clients, and I couldn’t ignore them for a video game.

By Thursday of the week, I realized I had barely slept all week long. Laundry didn’t get done. The house was a wreck. I lost two pounds because I wasn’t eating much. I had barely seen my husband all week long. Then the big truth dawned on me: the only reason why I had been able to get as much done in this review as I had was because the kids were gone and I was neglecting everything else. That sealed it for me. I finished my review, handed it in, and after it went live, I wrote my letter of resignation.

it is time

I’m not just leaving PSLS; I’m done with games writing, period. I’ve been part of this industry for 13 years, and I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. I’ve met my closest friends through gaming, including two of the writers here! But I don’t have the time I once had to devote to games. I’m trying to build two businesses, and I can’t work those properly if I’m always spending 50 hours a week on reviewing a game for very little pay.

It’s just time for me to close this chapter in my life and take the next steps forward.

What does this mean for Strategy Guide Reviews? Not a damn thing. We will plunder on, because this was always my little pet project I developed out of the love of strategy guides. I’ll actually have more time to devote to guides now! Maybe I can even play Breath of the Wild! That just sounds like crazy talk to me, but it’s my kind of crazy.

Monday Gaming Diary: Mass Effect Makes Me Happy

December 21, 2015 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Chris and I have talked about this before with our Gaming as Medication vidcast, but Mass Effect is just one of those games that makes me happy. It’s my own personal group therapy–just me, Shepard, and the Normandy crew. I started a new Shepard on the original game recently thanks to a serious Mass Effect discussion with my boss. I remembered that the first game is one of the games that is backwards compatible with the Xbox One, and I couldn’t pop that disc in fast enough.

This Shepard I’m focusing more on actual role-playing than I have before. My Paragon Shepard did everything a paragon is supposed to do. For every conversation, the top dialogue choice was always selected, she always chose the charm options, and she never did anything untoward another being. I tried to make Renegade Shepard the full asshole he was supposed to be, but I chickened out with a few decisions in the second game. This time, Goth Shepard is Goth. She has black hair, black lipstick, even black-ish blush. I chose the hairstyle to hang in her face. I imagine she constantly blows the bangs out of her eyes. I also imagine her saying, “Cool story, bro,” to everyone, because she doesn’t care about what anyone has to say. The investigate option? She ignores it. She doesn’t give a fuck. She doesn’t care why she’s being sent to do this or that. Whatever man, just tell me what I’m shooting at. All of her dialogue choices stay in the middle too, further enhancing her no care attitude.

As a result she’s getting more Renegade points, which I find hilarious.

Am I skipping through the story and blowing past the side missions? Oh hell no! The best way to experience the Mass Effect therapy is to do it all. While it’s true she doesn’t care about much, she does like getting paid for side missions. That black lipstick ain’t free!

I know that this marks my third or fourth time to play Mass Effect, but I don’t care. The game just makes me so happy. As such, my Mondays are officially Mass Effect Monday. Judge away. Goth Shepard don’t care.

SGR Coffee Break 41 – The Potential Stress of Choice in Games

November 5, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

While playing Until Dawn, I was texting Keri about my decision to try and kill everyone off. This led to a small chat about how choices in games can not only be stressful, but how they can also lead to not wanting to complete a game. I’m looking at you, Mass Effect. We decided to expand on our simple IM conversation and dive deeper into this rabbit hole. Keri explains why decisions stress her out and I dive into what I had to do to finally have a good time with games where my choices affected the ending. You get to choose if you listen to our exhausted ramblings, or look at our lovely faces. Go ahead, pick on option…….and go!
