Transformers: War for Cybertron Mini-Review

August 15, 2012 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Megatron - War for Cybertron

I was excited forTransformers: War for Cybertronwhen it first released back in 2010. A Transformers game that calls back to the 1980s show? Of course I’m excited! I bought it the week it released, played it for a few days, and then I got distracted by other deadlines. I think I was still with Kombo back then, so most likely I got another game I had to review or something else released that caught my attention even more…who knows. The game was shelved with the ideal that I would finish it that year. Considering that it’s 2012 and I’m just now writing a mini-review on it, obviously that never came true. It’s sad that it takes the announcement of a sequel to get my butt in gear, but it happens, and it happened withWar for Cybertron. I’m really sad that I waited so long to play it.

Transformers: War for Cybertron is not a revolutionary game by stretch of the means. The game itself presents nothing new in terms of gameplay. It’s a third-person shooter, but it’s not cover-based, so it often feels clunky in how you have to “take cover” from incoming fire. Basically, if you can’t find a pillar or a doorway to stand behind, you’re kind of hosed if you walk into an ambush. Transforming into a vehicle/plane sometimes helps, but unless you’re a plane, you can count on running out of ammo very quickly.

Nothing is very creative either. For example, with the tank enemies–actual tanks or tank-like soldiers a/k/a brutes–you have to shoot them in the back. With some mini-bosses, you have to shoot off their appendages before their weak spots will magically open up. Every enemy and situation you come across, you’ll know almost instantly how to take care of it, because you’ll surely have already encountered similar situations in other games. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since you’ve played a game; everything will feel similar.

The game also suffers from severe steep climbs in difficulty. It’s divided up into two campaigns, Autobot and Decepticon, and they run almost identically. One Act requires using plane Transformers, and the final Act is just a boss fight. I played the campaigns “in order,” meaning that I started with Act I and played straight through to Act X, which started with the Decepticon campaign. The difficulty stayed very similar all throughout until I hit Act X and the Autobot final boss fight. The difficulty suddenly jumped to OMG YOU’RE GOING TO DIE IF YOU BLINK. This wasn’t one of those situations where it seemed hard at first but once you figure out what to do, it’s cake, like the first Guardian boss in Darksiders II. It was incredibly hard even after I saw the patterns and knew what to do. The Decepticon boss fight took me about three tries, and that was mostly my own fault. The Autobot boss fight took me roughly ten tries, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think of throwing my controller. One checkpoint in the fight WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE. I honestly thought I would never get through it and I was going to rage quit yet another game this year.

All that said, why did I likeTransformers: War for Cybertronso much? Despite all of these flaws, the game is so much fun. I’ve played a lot of heavy hitters this year, including games that hit me emotionally and games I got overly frustrated with, so it was nice to take a break with a game that is honestly a lot of fun. It called back a lot of my nostalgia to be sure, but since it replicated so much of the 1980s fun SO WELL, it’s why it was so much fun. It’s not going to tug at your heartstrings, and it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s mindless fun for Transformers fans.

Since there are so many Transformers games based off of the movies, it’s nice to find one that stands out and calls back to old school fans. I cannot wait for Fall of Cybertronnext week now.

Monday Gaming Diary: Stack of Shame Shuffle

July 9, 2012 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Stack of Shame Shuffle

Yup, I’ve reshuffled my stack of shame yet again. As you can see from the image above, I even have deadlines on each of the games. I am on what you may call a very tight schedule from now through the fall.

Two forces triggered this latest shuffle. The first was an invitation to attend a THQ press party for Darksiders II, where I’ll actually be sent–not on my own dime, unlike E3 and SDCC–to a video game event. I’ve never finished the first Darksiders game, and I’d really like to have it done or at the very least a majority of it done before I head out and make a complete ass out of myself in front of the developers and publishers. The event is July 25th. In other words, as soon as I get my butt home from SDCC, it will be Darksiders, balls to the wall, and set on the Easy difficulty setting. When you absolutely, positively have to burn through a game in a week, Easy is the only way to go.

That’s been the biggest monkey wrench in my stack of shame kerfluffle. The second force was the announcement of the fall release for Transformers Fall of Cybertron. I never finished War for Cybertron like I wanted to, and now I have until late August to do so in order to be able to review the guide for Fall of Cybertron when it releases. Thank God I’ve already conceded reviewing both the Borderlands 2 game and guide to others. I would have had to add Borderlands to my higher priority list, and well, then I could just schedule a breakdown by late September.

Once that hit me, the realization of other sequels’ releasing also came into full epiphany. Assassin’s Creed III releases October 30th. Halo 4 releases November 6th. I must finish Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach in order to fully understand what will happen in these games.

Keep in mind that I also have to review Inversion for GA ASAP, as that game released while I was at E3 and I just haven’t had a chance to get around to it yet, AND Kingdom Hearts 3DS releases July 31st.

It’s a good thing I have friends with young children, so none of us get out ever. If they don’t hear from me for a month or two, it will be nothing too unusual for either of us.

Weekly Poll: How many games do you play at once?

August 30, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Weekly Poll: Do you use strategy guides? The opinion seems to be evenly split between using guides with certain franchises and only using guides when unfortunately stuck. No need for me to create a poll to find out which guides the latter uses the most often; I’m fairly certain I already know the answer.

As for the last entry, well, I know exactly who that person is (and if you’re a friend of mine on Facebook, you know who it is, too) and I especially expected that response. What would have surprised me would have been additional votes, because surely readers of this site come here because 1) you’re a fan of guides or 2) you like my writing or possibly both!

But let’s move on to the next poll. How many games to you play at once?

I’ve been plagued with this for the last few weeks, especially since I’ve been called upon to review more games. I’ve had to stop playing Transformers: War for Cybertron due to reviewing Arc Rise Fantasia, as miserable as that game made me. I just didn’t have enough hours in the day to do both. So MattG stepped in and said that I should always make time for a game for myself and a review game, unless the two happen to coincide. Right now my review assignment is Ys Seven, and even though I really enjoy the game, it’s definitely not a “me” game I would choose.

That “me” game has been DeathSpank, which has been more fun than I thought possible. And another friend has implored me to pick back up his Castlevania challenge. So fine. I’ll play a review game, a challenge game, and a game for me. And once DeathSpank is done (possibly by tonight), I’ll be switching back and forth between Red Dead Redemption and Transformers: War for Cybertron.

Is anyone else as insane as I am or am I alone? Or do I pale in comparison to some of you?

New strategy guides: Castlevania SOTN and Transformers War for Cybertron

July 20, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Transformers War for Cybertron strategy guidesI picked up one of these guides at the store and the other one arrived in the mail from an eBay seller. Can you guess which is which?

I’m actually quite pleased with the condition of the Castlevania guide. The only damage it has is what you see on the front cover. The first thing I did after examining the damage (and leaving positive feedback on eBay) was check and see everything I missed in the very beginning. I missed so much, I’m seriously thinking of starting over from scratch. I missed a major weapon, I now know how to reach certain areas I couldn’t figure out earlier, and I missed equipment and what I’m sure are important items. No wonder I had such a hard time with the first boss.

Okay, thinking over. I’m going to start over. Then I can hear about man being “a miserable pile of secrets” again.

The second guide was totally a spur of the moment purchase. I received $35 in gift certificates from Best Buy, and since I had errands to do in a Best Buy vicinity, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to stop on in and pick up something that ISN’T on my Amazon wishlist. My birthday is Saturday, so I don’t want to accidentally spoil a possible gift. It hit me that Transformers War for Cybertron released last month, and the trailer had me laughing so hard I knew I would own it eventually. I took the very last copy Best Buy had of both the game and the guide, the latter of which I had to dig for in their shoddy organization for guides. I found it tucked between a NIER guide and a guide for Spirit Tracks, so I assume someone tucked it back there for later. Too bad, sucker! MINE MINE MINE!!

I have no idea when I’m going to get to this game, but I’m just so happy to have it. And the guide. I’ve got the touch…I’ve got the powwwwwwer!
