In Pursuit of Platinum: Ain’t Gonna Happen With Horizon Zero Dawn

May 17, 2019 By Keri Honea 97 Comments

I absolutely loved Horizon Zero Dawn. I spent over 56 hours with the main game alone, and I’m currently working through the Frozen Wilds DLC. My adoration of the game should not be questioned.

In fact, I’m super close to obtaining that Platinum trophy. Current trophy count is only two trophies shy of getting it. But I’m not going to.

These last two trophies require completing all of the Hunting Grounds activities once and getting a Blazing Sun (first place) in each one. The problem is, I hate these activities. Only reason why I completed one Hunting Ground at all was to get into the Hunter’s Lodge in Meridian. I did not enjoy it, even though I earned Blazing Suns at each trial my first try. The countdown clock stresses the hell out of me. From that alone, I didn’t plan on trying any other Hunting Grounds.

Horizon Zero Dawn Hunting Grounds

Behold, the only Hunting Grounds where I racked up full Blazing Suns.

Hunting Grounds. I Hate ’em.

But Twitter people told me not to give up. Save them all for late in the game when you have all these weapons and gear. It may take you a couple of tries, but you can do it. So I caved and tried two more Hunting Ground locations. Fuck all of this, I’m done.

I’m not enjoying the challenges, even when they teach me something new, because of the damn clock. I’m yelling in frustration. I’m screaming at wayward Glinthawks that decide during a particular attempt it’s time to fly in and make my life a living hell. After my third or fourth try at finishing the challenge of destroying five frozen machines within a minute-thirty, only for a friggin’ Bellowback run me over in the last few seconds, I packed it in.

No virtual prize is worth being miserable for a few seconds, much less a few minutes. I don’t care if I’m a quitter or whatever. I’m too old and care too little to force myself to push on with it.

But Keri, don’t you have a strategy guide for this? Why yes I do! And it gives fantastic advice, but it doesn’t make the tasks any less miserable. It doesn’t take away the clock. I still hate them.

Besides, I have so many other games to play. Those 56 hours I spent in HZD doing virtually everything were not a waste of time. Forcing myself to do these trials I hate is.

The Walkthrough by Doug Walsh Review

May 16, 2019 By Keri Honea 355 Comments

The Walkthrough reviewI’ve always enjoyed Doug Walsh‘s strategy guides. The first one I remember distinctly as his was the Crisis Core strategy guide. It’s only partially because I loved that game oh-so-very much. Then he kind of dropped off the strategy guide planet (if I followed him on other social media venues, I would have known where he went) for a couple of years and returned right before Prima Games announced their closure. I’ve been in a period of mourning ever since, so you can imagine my delight when Doug Walsh reached out to me out of the blue.

He wanted to give me a few of his strategy guides he never opened, and he wanted me to be aware of his upcoming books. One in particular, he said, was sure to get my attention. Lo and behold, he announced The Walkthrough: Insider Tales From a Life in Strategy Guides. I couldn’t type SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY fast enough. He did me one better and offered a review copy. I thought I was excited when he randomly emailed me, but no, this one topped it.

I have all this secret, insider information about what really goes on behind the strategy guide. I learned some in my various conversations with Dan Birlew over the years, not to mention my wonderful BradyGames contact that I will not name. But here it was. I put down a Warhammer 40,000 novel for this. You know how hard that is for me?

Mr. Walsh held nothing back in his memoir. And it’s DELIGHTFUL.

The More You Know…

I read the book in about three days. It was incredibly hard to put down, especially when he wound down to the end of his career. After reading it, I almost regret some of the harsh things I’ve said about some strategy guides, because I had zero clue just how much work went into these books. (Almost only because some of them had really bad information. I may never forgive Piggyback in full for their Final Fantasy XIII strategy guide.)

Walsh explained exactly what they were responsible for, which was almost literally everything. I had no idea they made the maps themselves. I wrongly assumed they received the map layouts or the map design from the developer or publisher. Of course they were responsible for marking the maps with collectibles, strategy footnotes, boss fights, etc., but drawing up the maps themselves? Did the game developers support the guide writers at all in this process?

You learn that no, they really didn’t. Walsh is sure to mention the outliers, the companies that welcomed them with open arms and provided almost any info they needed. He also mentioned the worst of the worst, the companies that gave the writers bad copies of games, restricted what they were allowed to include, and generally did anything and everything to not be helpful.

Basically, writing a strategy guide was an absolute beating. They were paid well to be sure, but they often had to write an entire book in a matter of a few weeks. That includes playing the game in full and leaving no stone unturned. It makes my deadlines to review games seem like a walk in the park.

No Holds Barred

When I said above that Walsh held nothing back, I mean he held NOTHING back. Want to know what REALLY happened during the Brady/Prima merger? It’s all here. Want to know what he really thought of Prima Games’ books? He doesn’t mince words.

I think I DM’d him on Twitter at least 10 times when I read about the merger and why he believes Prima died in the end, and all of them said, “HOLY SHIT.” I’m not exaggerating about what an eye-opener this all was, and these epiphanies hit me personally. Suddenly so many things were lining up in regards to my interactions with Prima Games after the merger. It makes sense why all of the contacts I adored at BOTH publishers magically found new jobs all at the same time.

Even more importantly, it hit why so many of the strategy guides post-merger dipped in quality. Chris and I discussed on the podcast that we hated the merger simply because we dislike a lack of competition. Without competition, what drives a company to produce the best possible work? Not much. Sure, they want books to sell, but no one is vying for the same licenses anymore, so why put in that extra effort?

If you’ve been a fan of this site at all, you need Doug Walsh’s book in your life. I’ve already reached out to my former BradyGames contacts and pushed them to preorder it. I urge everyone here to do the same. You don’t have to want all the seedy scoops inside to appreciate it either. I would have loved it just as much if he just talked about his experience writing strategy guides. That’s fascinating in of itself.

The Walkthrough is available in eBook format (for Kindle) and paperback.

(By the way, be sure to read ALL of his footnotes! They’re humorous, provide unique tidbits, and I’m mentioned in one of them in a very roundabout way. Yes, it’s in regard to Crisis Core!)

SGR Rating: 5/5

In Pursuit of Platinum – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Platinum trophy

I grabbed the platinum like Theseus grabbed the Minotaur by the horns!

Not this past weekend, but the weekend before that, I finally finished Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While I was at it, I secure the last couple of trophies for that Platinum. My final time after getting all of the trophies and completing every single side quest clocked in at 123 hours. And I’m still sad I’m done with the game.

Although, I’m done and yet I’m not done. Ubisoft has been cranking out weekly “Lost Tales of Greece” that I’m plowing through as they release, because I can’t let this world GO.

Part of it is because I love the world of Ancient Greece. Give me Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome, and I will always be a happy camper. Is that why I loved Ryse so much? Yes. Yes it is. I do not care. The only thing that would have made this world better is if it actually took place during the time of the Trojan War and Odysseus. But that said, I love where it is. The Peloponnesian War at the height of Greek philosophy was perfect. And at least now I know the proper way of pronouncing Socrates, Hippocrates, and Pythagoras.

I suppose when the Lost Tales are done, I’ll tackle “The Hidden Blade” DLC as well. I mean, there are all these extra trophies just begging me to collect. Perhaps I can get a Platinum in Assassin’s Creed Origins too. Well, that will happen eventually. Right now I’m debating upon whether I bother reviewing the strategy guide at all, because that’s definitely not timely anymore.

What I’ve Been Playing – I’m Never Leaving Greece

March 19, 2019 By Keri Honea 56 Comments

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Unicorn

*blows dust off of website*

Dang, I really let the place go, haven’t I? I didn’t mean to, except I probably did. I was getting so swamped with work at PlayStation Lifestyle, and then Prima Games went belly up. I didn’t think I would ever find time to come back to this site, even with Future Press and Piggyback still going strong. I was prepared to pack it all in, even though I have guides to review, just because I was too busy playing other games and writing about them to keep up.

But then I was fired out of the blue by the corporate owner, so hey, no more playing games I don’t want to anymore, AMIRITE?

After the collapse of Action Trip in 2016, I knew that PSLS was going to be my last game writing gig. Let’s face it; I’m over 40, I have two school-age kids, and I do own two businesses. I’m tired and I just don’t have the turnaround like I used to. I’m in bed before 10 most nights. If I stay up later, it’s going to be ONE BAD DAY the next day.

I was fine giving PSLS my all (and believe me, I fucking was), but now that it’s over, I don’t have it in me to start over with a new site. I’m not going to stop gaming, naturally, but now I actually have time for these guides and the games I want to play. It’s crazy, I know!

Or, I would have the time for all of it if I could put Assassin’s Creed Odyssey down already. I am determined to do practically every little thing in this game. Kill all the Cultists. Hunt down all of the Legendary Beasts. Sail everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Unlock every Eagle synchronization point. Max out my ship. Become Arena champion. Become the top mercenary. Unlock all the trophies. I am so glad I turned down the difficulty after I turned in my review, because I know it would possibly double my current time. I played 45 hours on Normal. I now, as of Sunday, have 116 hours in total. And no, I’m still not done.

But I’m almost finished. I’m skipping a few side quests in the last few islands because, quite frankly, I don’t need the experience, items, or drachmae. I’ve also killed all the Cultists, so there’s nothing else these side quests could really offer me. I’m not ready to part ways with Kassandra, and yet I’m very ready for it all to be over so I can move on.

Move on to what, you say? Well I have a few options. I did buy the strategy guide for Anthem, but it sounds like it’s best to wait before opening up that game. Then The Division 2 arrived over Spring Break, and I’m dying to play that. Jumping from one Ubisoft open world game to the next could mentally break me, though.

And then there’s my Backlog Challenge from the guys at Nerds Gone Platinum. They had a huge Backlog Challenge last year, and I got to pick their “Not a Challenge” games for this year. They offered to pick games out of my Backlog for me as well, and, well, I was scared. I haven’t started them because game reviews and now ACOdyssey, but I really should start at least one of them very, very soon. Here’s what they challenged me to do:

  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • NieR:Automata
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Tiny, linear games, aren’t they? I’m so doomed.

Farewell, Prima Games

November 9, 2018 By Keri Honea 286 Comments

News hit me hard this morning, so I had to do a quick response and goodbye video for Prima Games. They were the first to support my site, even when it was a tiny thing on Blogger. I’ve met amazing people there, and I’ll miss all of them so very much.
