What happened to the Epic Mickey strategy guide review?

March 3, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Epic Mickey Strategy Guide

🙁

As much as it pains me, there will be no Epic Mickey strategy guide review. I only played the game for about four hours before I decided I couldn’t take it anymore. I then ended up selling my Wii all-together, so there’s really no way I could play the game at all. Reviewing the guide based on the first two worlds and one boss really isn’t fair to the guide. Those sections were great, and chances are, the rest of the guide was great too, but it still isn’t very honest.

As such, next week I will be hosting yet another strategy guide giveaway, this time for Epic Mickey. I received the Collector’s Edition from the publisher, and I don’t feel right keeping it. Someone out there who does love the game will give this book the devoted attention it deserves.

More details on that next week.

I have been making some great headway in both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect, and I hope that trend continues. I’ve also been playing a bit of Dragon Quest VI, which has also been quite fun. Get ready for a round of RPG guide reviews, folks. Can you feel the excitement? It’s emanating in turn-based pores. Baddum kssh!

Weekly Poll: Which Mass Effect game did you like the best?

February 28, 2011 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

Dragon Age: Origins pollThe response to last week’s poll was incredibly underwhelming. I’m so glad I wasn’t waiting for all the responses, because I would have missed out on some great gaming this week. Dragon Age: Origins is the first game in years (really, years) that I have to stop myself from playing. I could easily play this game all night. I have to force myself to stop when it gets to midnight, because I don’t have the luxury of getting up whenever I want to the following day. I’m probably about 8 hours in, and I have to say, the sheer number of sidequests is going to be the death of me. There’s no way I can finish it before Dragon Age II releases next week, but I really want to get these games finished before the end of the year. [Read more…]

Collector’s Edition Strategy Guide Giveaway! – Tekken 5 and Alan Wake

February 24, 2011 By Keri Honea 7 Comments

Want free Collector’s Editions of strategy guides? Of course you do!

Tekken 5 Strategy GuideToday I’m starting some sort of a contest, and the prizes are Collector’s Editions of Strategy Guides for Tekken 5 and Alan Wake. The Tekken 5 Strategy Guide is still shrink-wrapped in all of its hardcover glory. The publishers/writers are Future Press, and this guide has NEVER been released stateside. If you wanted it before, you had to go through BradyGames, and they did not offer a Collector’s Edition of the guide.

Alan Wake Collector's Edition Strategy GuideThe Alan Wake strategy guide in this giveaway is also a Collector’s Edition from Prima Games. Sad to say, it no long has its box that contained both the Survival Guide and the Illuminated artbook as my mail carrier decided to rip the box and smash it quick handily. Somehow, though, the books themselves remained unscathed and in pristine condition. The Survival Guide is paperback, but the Illuminated artbook is hardcover. Basically, if you’re a hardcore fan of Alan Wake, you need these in your collection. [Read more…]

Backlog Progress Report: Dragon Age: Origins

February 23, 2011 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

Dragon Age: OriginsLast night I opted to FINALLY play a game with an accompanying strategy guide (sorry, Two Worlds II), and the ever-seemingly popular Dragon Age: Origins won the lottery. I guess it’s partly from all the hype of the upcoming Dragon Age II that prompted me, or the fact that so many people on Twitter are either replaying it or playing it for the first time. So far though, I am quite, quite pleased.

I originally started the game back when it released on the PS3. I played as an elven mage, and it did not take long for me to realize what a mistake that was. I had to keep switching control of characters because it’s next to impossible to keep the story moving while hanging in the back. Why did I hang in the back? Well, as a mage, I have virtually no armor and no real way of killing things quickly. Usually I was the one killed quickly. The visuals on the PS3 were terrible as well. Textures kept popping in and out, everyone’s face looked a bit odd, and the controls didn’t flow well for me. I sold it back for Darksiders (another game in the backlog) in eagerness to play DAO on the PC, only to find out that none of my PCs could handle it. [Read more…]

Weekly Poll: Does Dragon Age live up to the hype?

February 21, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Strategy Guide Genre PollHuge apologies about the lack of writing last week. On Monday, a routine vet appointment for my beloved Chow Chow, Mufasa, turned into an all day emergency visit that did not end well. I love my dogs like I love my son, so I took the suddenness of it all really, really hard. I didn’t even contribute to Games are Evil last week, and well, I didn’t play any games either. Yeah, I was hit hard.

But I’m better now, and I’m ready to get my writing groove back on and continue my gushing over strategy guides. I have two strategy guide reviews planned for this week, AND I’m going to have a strategy guide giveaway for two different Collector’s Edition strategy guides. Has your interest returned? Let us begin…

As for the poll from two weeks ago, I’m thinking that maybe I should have combined the JRPGs and WRPGs into just RPGs. But then again, it’s interesting to see that the majority of you use guides for JRPGs. I personally find that JRPGs are more difficult in terms of gameplay just because the typical turn-based combat system creates really, really long battles. The super-secret stuff seems to be far more hidden as well than Western RPGs. I assume this is because JRPGs want you to play for a looooooong time. [Read more…]
