Mass Effect and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars strategy guides

Two new guides for my latest expeditions. I’ve decided to bump Darksiders for now in favor of some RPG time. I’ve played several action games in a row, and I need a little break. I have a few friends who have been harping on me to play Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 for some time now, so this seemed to be as good a time as any. I have nothing demanding my attention until Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep releases in September, so it’s about time to get Mass Effect out of the way. It’s also written by two of my favorite guide authors, Bryan Stratton and Stephen Stratton, so I can’t wait.

There is actually a funny story behind the Mario guide. See, that wasn’t the guide I meant to buy. I meant to buy the guide for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, since that is the game that MattG actually loaned me. I’m going to have to purchase Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on WiiWare. But I got them mixed up on eBay, (they have similar names, after all) so this one came first. The other is on its way.

And yes, I will have guide reviews up soon of BOTH Bayonetta and Portal.

Strategy Guide Talk at E3

June 17, 2010 By Keri Honea 13 Comments

Future Press strategy guides logoI finished Bayonetta this past Sunday, but my attendance at E3 has stalled me from writing up the review just yet. I know, I know, poor me. But this doesn’t mean I have forsaken strategy guides while I am here! Yesterday afternoon, I got the delightful opportunity to meet with Frank Glaser of FuturePress, Europe’s strategy guide publisher.

Frank and I discussed how I’m coming along with Bayonetta a little, but we mostly just geeked out about what he and I love most: gaming and strategy guides. I learned exactly how much pride FuturePress puts into their games, and I was even more pleased to learn that the company prides themselves on being gamers first and guide creators second. I think this whole-heartedly explains why their guides are so great and why I have very little difficulties with them. Take their guide for inFamous, for example. This is without a doubt the best guide I have come across thus far with the current generation of gaming, and Frank insists that it’s hardly one of their best guides.

We went over what we each like to see in guides, what games we like, and basically geeked out like the big guide and gaming nerds we are. I’m looking forward to their next guide immensely.

But I suppose in the meantime I need to get moving on writing up my review for Bayonetta.

My Favorite Kind of Gifts: Strategy Guides and Art Books

Alan Wake Strategy Guide Collector's Edition: Guide and Artbook

Look at what arrived in my mailbox this week! Prima Games was kind enough to not only send me a copy of one of their latest strategy guides, but the guide was part of the Collector’s Edition, which also included the gorgeous Alan Wake Illuminated art book. As my friends can attest to from this past weekend at A-Kon, I adore art books. I own possibly too many, if there is such a thing. That’s actually one of the main reasons why I started collecting strategy guides in the first place: for their art book value.

Thank you so much for the gift, Prima Games. I hope I can meet some of your staff next week at E3!

You heard correctly. I will be at E3 this year and I am pumped for all the conferences and appointments I am going to! BradyGames, Prima Games, and FuturePress…PREPARE TO BE STALKED BY A STRATEGY GUIDE FANGIRL.

Gaming Challenge

June 7, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Awhile back, I challenged a Kombo colleague, MattG, to give [amazon-product text=”Heavy Rain” type=”text”]B002CZ38KA[/amazon-product] a chance. The story is so incredible and I found the gameplay to be very immersive, and well, I knew he wouldn’t like it and I admit I wanted an excuse to debate with him. He’s so set in his ways and loves such specific games that I couldn’t help myself. I loaned him my copy of the game and bet fellow Kombo cohorts that he wouldn’t like it. He’s almost finished with the game, and we haven’t really discussed any of it (we’re saving it for a podcast) but he has issued a gaming challenge to me of his own.

I was certain it was going to be [amazon-product text=”Super Mario Galaxy 2″ type=”text”]B002BSA388[/amazon-product] just because he loves it so much and is convinced I’m a bit crazy for not liking platforming games. I was wrong. He found out a couple of days ago that I’ve never played Portal, and he has made that his challenge to me. Unfortunately for me, I’m going to have to purchase it from XBLA because I have no interest in buying the [amazon-product text=”Orange Box” type=”text”]B000R0PLK2[/amazon-product] set. At least it’s only $15. But then I got a thought today. Does this game have a strategy guide? I could review it while completing my challenge and not drop this blog completely in the meantime! And sure enough, it does.

I’ve already ordered it, and as soon as I finish [amazon-product text=”Bayonetta” type=”text”]B001YI0Z2U[/amazon-product] (which shouldn’t be that long from now) it will be Portal-city for me. I’ve been told I’ll hate the game, but isn’t that what a gaming challenge is all about? I wonder if MattG has made a similar bet with our friends…

Mixed Thoughts on Bayonetta

June 2, 2010 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

BayonettaBayonetta is fun. Crazy fun. Crazy over-the-top non-stop action fun. And it’s funny. Her poses, her comments, the way she walks…it’s all hilarious. But, two things are getting old for me. The big one is the quick-time events that plague every boss fight. I’ve died once for pretty much all of them because I couldn’t figure out the button combo quick enough. None of the events are that hard, they’re just getting tiresome. I’m missing some fantastic cut scenes because I keep scanning the screen for QTE triggers.

The second thing is the fighting. It’s hack-and-slash with flair. Your moves have to be deliberate and sometimes well planned out, and it often requires you to die once or twice to figure out what the new enemy has to bring to the table. While activating the Witch Time ability and slowing down time never gets boring, I’m getting tired of the formula of walk around, massive enemy fight, unlock seal, walk again, massive enemy fight, cut scene, unlock seal, boss fight, and finish with QTE. Granted, most action games have the same formula. NIER certainly did. There it was run around and kill things, run back, run somewhere else, boss fight. And as for Final Fantasy XIII, well, there’s a definite pattern there as well. Maybe I’m just extra sensitive to such patterns right now since I’ve played two, now three, games back-to-back with distinct patterns.

At least it’s fun, so it doesn’t seem like a complete chore. I’m also hooked on the story, and it presents a really interesting point of view of angels and witches. If I do indeed play Darksiders next, I may have more of my fill of angels to last me a lifetime.

I also have to say that the feminists out there who are crying out that Bayonetta exploits women have obviously not played a second of this game. Want to know what I’m talking about? You’ll have to play it for yourself.
