Question about Bayonetta Guide

January 6, 2010 By Keri Honea 3 Comments

I have a question out there for any reader who works at BradyGames or knows someone who does. What is the word on the Bayonetta strategy guide?

Gamestop has no information about it, Best Buy has it listed as backordered, and Amazon says it will take a week to just ship it. Even more strangely, there is no mention of this guide on BradyGames’ site. I left a message on the publisher’s facebook page, but I’m not sure I’ll receive a response.

I just want to know if it’s been canceled. If it has, I won’t wait for the guide to come in before playing. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Top Gaming Moments of 2009

January 4, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Normally I write about my top 5 gaming moments, but this year I could only think of four, since I spent most of the year finishing games from 2008. Hopefully that won’t happen this year. But without further ado, here we go!

1. Revisiting Italy – Assassin’s Creed 2

Assassin's Creed 2

I wasn’t a huge fan of the gameplay in AC2, but I will most likely NEVER experience a game like this one ever again. As I’ve said before, I went to Italy for my __th birthday a couple of years ago and Florence and Venice were two of the stops we made. Early on in the game, I was running Ezio all over the rooftops, and when I came to the Santa Croce Piazza, I froze and my mouth dropped open. I had a complete flashback of visiting that piazza two years before. I remembered the statues that are there now, the cafe where we ate lunch, and the little chocolate shop where we all feasted on some pieces of heaven. Not only that, I could see where all those things were in the game. Of course they weren’t actually there, considering that the game’s setting is Renaissance Italy, but I could see exactly where they all will be, or actually are to this day. It sent chills down my spine, and I had similar feelings about Venice while running around through all the bridges, and I know I’ll never experience anything like that in a game again.

2. Is this a game or a live action movie? – Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2

I’ve only played a couple of hours of Uncharted 2, but it only took five seconds for my jaw to drop at the wonder and beauty of the game. I nearly died a few times in this opening sequence because I had no idea that the cut scene was over and it was my turn to play. I have never seen such seamless cut scenes or such brilliant graphics that made me not only feel like I was playing an action movie, but I often forgot that I wasn’t simply watching one.

3. HOLY BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES! (the voices, anyway) – Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum for several reasons, the main one being that I just couldn’t see myself fitting it into my already tight schedule. However, the demo itself blew me away in terms of the voice-acting. When I heard Kevin Conroy’s voice emanate from Batman’s lips, and then heard Mark Hamill’s patented Joker laugh…I nearly had a nerdgasm on the couch. You can imagine what happened next when I heard Harley Quinn’s voice. It made me even more pleased to hear that this is the best Batman game ever made, so it’s wonderful that the best voices for Batman and Joker were a part of it.

4. The inFamous Ending – inFamous

inFamous - Kessler

I fully admit that I was blown away by Kessler’s true identity at the end of inFamous. I never once saw that coming, not even when Kessler sobbed that he loved Trish. I actually thought he was Trish’s or Cole’s father, and not, well, for spoiler’s sake I won’t say who. I don’t care if I’m the only one who was clueless up until the end. It was such a thrilling ending to a thrilling game.

Now I just have to get through playing it evil before the sequel comes out…

Gaming New Year’s Resolutions

January 1, 2010 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

I’ve been making these every year since about oh, not that long ago, and I’ve managed to actually stick with a couple of them. Hee. This year I’m trying to be far more realistic with my goals, especially since game developers seem to be hell bent on releasing fabulous games every two months. I mean, it’s great and all, but I could really use like three or four months to catch up on my backlog that goes back to the PS2 and GameCube.

1. Set aside time at night to play handheld games. This includes my iPhone games (since I write about them for the Examiner) as well. My plan is to find a way to play both consoles and handhelds at the same time. I haven’t been able to do that really well as of yet, but with Gabe’s new school schedule starting next week, I’m oh so hopeful. My secondary goals are to possibly finish Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Final Fantasy VII. Maybe start and finish Final Fantasy VIII. Ah, but all this is AFTER I finish Spirit Tracks, which I did order this week along with the guide. (So stay tuned, Mr. Stratton!)

2. Finish reviewing Dragon Age: Origins and Uncharted 2 before beginning a new game. If this means Bayonetta gets pushed back until after Final Fantasy XIII, then so be it.

3. Really try to finish what I start. I started and stopped far too many games this year. Some I plan on finishing, such as Final Fantasy x, Uncharted 2 and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, but I really need to stop that nasty habit and learn to either finish what I start or quit it entirely.

And I think that’s all I’m going to hold myself to for now. There’s no law that says I can’t add additional resolutions along the way.

Happy New Year everyone! This past year has been so much fun, and I hope that this next year is just as fun.

Bayonetta…and Me

December 30, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I’ve heard the buzz about Bayonetta for some time now, but I haven’t given it much thought. I know it stars a hot chick with some weird hair powers, and that should have ensnared me, but the fact that she totes a gun is what turned me off. I brushed off the game without a second thought.

Then last week, I decided to do the incredibly stupid thing of going to Gamestop the day before Christmas Eve to pick up a case for my PSPgo. I never bought one before, because I wanted to wait for options, blah blah blah, and then I suddenly had a need to transport it, so options shmoptions. I need that thing, unfortunately, now. So I had to wait in a very long line at Gamestop, filled with people who were positively shocked that the store was out of PS3s and Xboxes the day before Christmas Eve (seriously??), and while I waited, the store had a video running of tons of game trailers and promos.

And there it was, my very first Bayonetta trailer.

HOLY CRAP.

This game is gorgeous. I love the graphics. I love the action gameplay. So she uses a gun instead of a sword…it doesn’t look like I’d have to aim well. I am intrigued.

Then I made an even bigger mistake. I mentioned this fact to my friend Eric. He said he thought there might be a demo available, and dammit if he wasn’t right. I downloaded it and played it when Gabe went to bed and OMG I WANT THIS GAME. I know that demos have failed me in the past, both in what is good and bad, but I can’t help myself. Then I found out it has a strategy guide in the works. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is how I stumbled into Uncharted 2.

I placed my preorder for Bayonetta today, once again for the PS3. I was planning on having nothing but Dragon Age and Uncharted 2 until Heavy Rain and now that plan is completely out the window. Now I have to force myself to crank out both DA and UC2 as quickly as possible so I don’t start Bayonetta too late after its release.

I solidly blame Eric and Gamestop both for this, even though I’m well aware that no court would ever rule in my favor. I need new non-gaming friends who aren’t horrible influences.

Been Jonesing for some RPG Action

December 29, 2009 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

I know I had Uncharted 2 on my list next, but after playing Assassin’s Creed 2 and inFamous before that, I’ve been dying for a good RPG experience. And if you dare insinuate that Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days counts, I may have to find where you are and throttle you. Okay fine, so I was playing Final Fantasy X as well, and that does count.

I admit it! I just didn’t want to play another action game so quickly! Stop with the scrutiny and third-degree questioning! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

This will be one of my first experiences with a Western RPG, and since a good friend of mine is in the process of writing a piece about Western RPGs, I feel like I’m doing my own research to understand his upcoming editorial. I’ve been told that WRPGs and JRPGs are vastly different, and since I’ve never really played a Western game, I never could agree or disagree. I played Mass Effect for five minutes and I played the original Baldur’s Gate on PC years ago until my third disc broke, and I don’t think that’s enough to say I know the difference between the RPG styles.

I’ve only played Dragon Age for only three hours, so I haven’t gotten past my chosen origins story (I’ve been taking my time, I admit) but I can see the differences already. I’m not used to defining my character by what I say or do. Final Fantasy X had some dabble with that, but I don’t think anything you said altered too much of what people thought of your character. I mean, come on, it’s Tidus. He’s whiny, quite emo, and everyone already has their own perception of him and there are destined paths for him to go. For example, in Guado Salam, Tidus talks to Lulu about Yuna marrying for love, and she warns him to not fall in love with Yuna. You have the option there to say, “Too late,” “I like Rikku,” or “I’m in love with you,” or something similar to those. I seriously doubt that by saying Tidus is in love with Lulu would alter the huge cut scene that happened after Tidus reunites with Yuna after her wedding.

Awww, did I spoil a game that is seven years old? Hee.

But I think I’ve made my point. But despite this weird tangent I’ve walked down, I have really enjoyed DA so far. I’m already planning on when I can download the DLC and when I can try out the other origin stories. I’m a mage right now, but I’m curious what a warrior would be like.

But after DA will be Uncharted 2. Yes, it will.

Maybe.
