Glory Glory Hallelujah

June 6, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

After last night, I only have ONE more dungeon to go in Phantom Hourglass, the last tour of the Ocean King Temple. I flipped ahead a bit in the guide and I don’t have any other sidequests to do before heading out that way, so that’s my plan for tonight. And thank God, because as much fun as this game has been, I’m more than ready to put it to rest and close the cover of the Guide.

I honestly feel like I could review the guide right now, but after the debacle of the final boss in The World Ends with You guide, I trust nothing until the very end.

I must say that I’m very sad that Link didn’t get the Hammer until the second to last dungeon. That has to be the most fun weapon in his arsenal. I thought nothing could top the Bombchuchus, but oh was I wrong. I thoroughly enjoy smashing things to oblivion.

inFamous is IN, Tales Close to OUT

June 1, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Two good gamer friends have sent me lengthy e-mails both stating close to the same things about why I should put aside my fears and dive into the fun of inFamous. So thanks to Mike and Nick, I will be playing inFamous and reviewing the accompanying guide.

And it may be sooner than planned.

I am having… difficulty finishing the Tales sequel for the Wii. The gameplay is still fun, but the story is kind of boring. It seems to be way too parallel to the first game, almost like they slapped the same route with different characters with the interweaving of characters from the first game. I never even played the first game but I can tell it’s virtually the same. How? We’re collecting Centurion cores. The characters from the first game have mentioned several times that we’re going to the same places as where they found the Summoning Spirits. Really? The same places? I know it’s the same world, but you couldn’t think of different places to put the cores?

Although, I hate to quit something when I’m pretty much halfway done, even if the story is boring and a little too Pokemon for me at times. Of course, it doesn’t help that inFamous is soooo tempting…

On the Fence about inFamous

May 27, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Even after watching trailers and playing the demo, I’m not sure about inFamous.

I had fun with demo, I really did. And when I found out there is going to be a guide, it made me even more stoked. Finally some guide to review out of my RPG-rut! However, some elements in the demo frustrated me a little, and I fear that these same things will overly frustrate me in the game to the point of quitting.

I was hesitant with the platforming aspects, but that was silly of me. It’s not like a typical platformer, such as Ratchet and Clank or Super Mario Bros. In other words, I had fun platforming. However, you seem to be able to die quickly. That isn’t as much the problem as when you are really, really injured, the screen goes gray and blurry and your movements slow. That makes it just a little difficult to 1) try to find something to heal yourself with and 2) avoid getting shot.

I also know that it’s just a demo, and the game often isn’t like the demo. I also hope that the game teaches you more about the controls than the demo did. I had no time to get used to them. Suddenly I was on a ledge and told to go way over there and help the train. Um, who and do what now? I had no time to really practice how to use my electricity powers, so I died quite a bit while trying to get used to aiming, firing, and not getting shot (I did the latter poorly). Luckily when you die you’re transported back to a nearby checkpoint, and I hope this is true in the real game too.

I want to bring something else here besides RPGs, I really do, even though I really like them. Fortunately, I still have Tales of Symphonia to finish, so it’s not like I don’t have anything to work on right now.

If anyone out there can offer some inFamous advice, I’d love it.

Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World Initial Impressions

May 26, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

So far, this guide does as many things right as it does wrong.

The dungeons all have about the same element – insane puzzle mazes – and the guide is wonderful at providing quick solutions to the puzzles that include collecting all of the treasure chests. I have saved myself at least a few hours of agonizing torture in completing these mazes. For those late to the party, I hate puzzle mazes. And I’m not talking about the Legend of Zelda style mazes. I think a more recent example of such a maze can be found in the Eastern tribe temples in Lost Odyssey. I shudder to think of those puzzles again.

While the guide includes a large overworld map, it contains no other maps. No maps of the dungeons, villages, nothing. This leaves a large black mark on the guide. Since you can’t do any overworld exploring, I’m not sure why the guide includes an overworld map at all.

Boss tactics are in great detail, although I admit I really haven’t looked at them since I haven’t found the bosses too difficult. On the flipside, there is no detail on the bosses themselves. No information on the HP or weaknesses. Sometimes it’s nice to know that a boss has over 14,000 points of HP when you’re slicing just ten points of damage a hit. Occasionally these facts are mentioned in the tactics paragraphs, but that’s just poor design. At the very least, the HP should be designated next to the boss name.

I can honestly say though that I wouldn’t be playing this game without the guide. I like the story and the dialogue cracks me up, but the dungeons drive me insane. Not particularly my idea of fun, so if I didn’t have the guide to soothe my frustration, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World would be on my Amazon seller account.

Initial Impressions of Phantom Hourglass Guide

May 11, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

The walkthrough for this guide is so incredibly fantastic that I haven’t looked at the appendices once. I have no idea what is in the back of the book. The appendices could be horrific as far as I know. I’m hoping that they aren’t, because this guide is already a 5/5 and I don’t want to knock it down a level for crappy appendices.

Okay, okay I’ll admit it. Phantom Hourglass for the most part doesn’t need a guide — except when it comes to finding the elusive and random heart containers — so I’ve not really glanced at it that much. I also shamefully admit that without the dangling dog treat of Achievements, I’m not as eager to make sure I don’t miss anything. But after every dungeon, I do flip back through the guide to see if I have missed anything, and there have been a few times I wished I used the guide because it would have saved me a lot of trial and error and well, grief.

I have used the guide a lot when it comes to maneuvering the Temple of the Ocean King. I made it through the first time fine, but since you need to go more quickly each sequential time, I’ve used the guide to help with the shortcuts. It’s been especially helpful in this arena because I don’t get to play the game that often, so if it’s been weeks since the last time I visited the dungeon, I know I’ll forget what I’m supposed to do next.

So yes, this isn’t exactly a first impressions post for the guide since I’ve been playing for awhile, but eh, sue me. I hope to have this game finished by the end of the month, as well as the guide review!
