Monday Gaming Diary: MMO Cherry Has Been Officially Broken

March 14, 2016 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I’ve pretty much been only playing Tom Clancy’s The Division this entire week and weekend. I’ve gotten in over 24 hours of game time, and I wish I could take off the rest of the week of work to play more. I can honestly say that I’m excited about playing this until the level cap, and then diving into all of the DLC and expansions that will release over the next year. I even jumped into the PvP portion of the game and had a great time.

Tom Clancy's The Division

I’m really not sure why this has struck a chord with me over Destiny. I keep hearing that they’re a lot alike, and yet, Destiny never once grabbed my attention. I’m not sure if it’s the environment or the third-person perspective. I definitely prefer third-person shooters over first-person, but I don’t think that’s entirely it either. One thing I kept hearing about with Destiny was its lack of a story and lore, that players were just set down on the path of shooting aliens with some direction as to why, but not entirely. In The Division, you aren’t exactly given this deep story either, but the setting takes care of the story for you. The setting is a bit post-apocalyptic, with New York on quarantine due to an outbreak of a smallpox-like disease. You know that you’re a last line defense for a generic Division, and your task is to get Manhattan back under control. So it makes perfect sense that you’re setting out on random missions to restore order, cut down on the gangs, and recover research on the virus for a vaccine. It makes sense why there are rioters and looters who are out to overthrow control. At the very least, I am able to tell anyone what the game is about if they ask. Every time I ask someone what Destiny is about, I get a bunch of hemming and hawing as they try to get out some sort of explanation. Usually it ends with, well, you don’t play for the story. I still like to know what’s going oh, yeah? At least I know Mario is trying to save Princess Peach from Bowser half the time.

I half wish there was an official guide and I’m half glad there isn’t. Most of the game will be so different by the end of the year, which would kill a reason for a strategy guide. On the other hand, I’d love help with finding some of the collectibles. I see them on my map, but some of them, I can’t figure out how to reach for the life of me!

Speaking of which, I’m wasting time writing here. New York isn’t going to save itself!

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Handheld Strategy Guide Review

March 9, 2016 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

As promised, I sat and reviewed Prima Games’ eGuide for LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, as this was the only way to find a strategy guide for the handheld version of the game. While I loathed the handheld version, something I state way too much in this video, the strategy guide for the most part did what it could to help players get through the ridiculous collectibles in the game. I don’t mean that the number was ridiculous; I mean the types of collectibles themselves were ridiculous.

Without further ado, I present my thoughts on the handheld portion of the LEGO Marvel’s Avengers eGuide.

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD Collector’s Edition Strategy Guide – Why Should I Buy?

March 7, 2016 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii U released last Friday, giving me hope that maybe I will indeed finish this game this time. And then the collector’s edition of the strategy guide appeared, which did make me squeal with delight. But why buy this collector’s edition when Twilight Princess has had other strategy guide collector’s editions? There are actually a few reasons, and only one of them is because of the different control scheme compared to the Wii.

I hope to have a full review rather soon, at least soon for The Legend of Zelda. These games area always long, but I always wanted to finish this one. Don’t point out I said the same for Wind Waker. Just don’t.

Monday Gaming Diary: It’s been a year of the point-and-click

March 7, 2016 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

All weekend long, I powered through a point-and-click adventure to review for work, Heaven’s Hope. After I finished and logged it in my spreadsheet of games started and finished (yes, I do keep records), I realized that the last three games I’ve finished were all point-and-click adventures: Order of the Thorne: King’s Challenge, Firewatch (yeah this counts), and now Heaven’s Hope. It’s really crazy to think that just a few years ago, this genre was pretty dead and gone. Thanks to Double Fine and Telltale and their successes, they have made quite the comeback.

As much as I love Telltale’s games, if you play enough of them back-to-back, they start to feel the same-ish. Telltale has a fantastic formula that will keep players guessing, as well as laughing and/or crying, but there is only so much of that formula you can take before it all runs together and feels stale. Maybe stale isn’t the right word, but you do want something new.

Heaven's Hope

One thing I can say about all three of these games is that none of them were alike. They were each challenging in their own way, except for Firewatch. I’ll just leave that one out of my thought process here. None of them were like Double Fine’s zaniness either in solving puzzles. Even when I got absolutely stuck, discovering the solution made sense. Also, none of these had an insane amount of backtracking that consistently grew old with each step. Heaven’s Hope helped alleviate this with a fast travel ability. Every point-and-click adventure should contain a fast travel ability. I might not have raged at Broken Age as much in the second act if there was a fast travel option.

I’m glad to see so many options coming to this genre. I loved it a lot when I was far younger, and I love them even more with the inability to get into an unwinnable situation. Not even Telltale has fail states, unless you don’t react quickly enough and you get the main character killed. That’s probably the worst problem with those games; no one enjoys quicktime events, Telltale. No one.

However, I am afraid of oversaturation of the genre as well. I think we’re witnessing this with space sims, and I’d hate to see the point-and-click become overdone as well. At least with the point-and-click, there are a wide variety of stories and ideas one can play with the genre. Space sims are slightly more limiting.

I’m writing up my review of Heaven’s Hope today, but I can say that I recommend it as much if not more than Order of the Thorne: King’s Challenge.

Oh wait, look…The Division showed up for review. Well, it’s been nice knowing all of you. Time to take that MMO plunge!

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Strategy Guide Review

March 1, 2016 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

LEGO Marvel's Avengers strategy guide reviewHooray for the first strategy guide review of the year! It’s just March…for a January strategy guide release…that’s not too bad.

And I’m digressing already. The LEGO Marvel’s Avengers strategy guide was by my side during my lengthy run through Manhattan, the SHIELD Helicarrier, and the numerous other Hub Worlds. Yes, I did obtain that Platinum trophy, but how much did the strategy guide help me do so? I explain the good and the bad below.
