Monday Gaming Diary: No Diablo 3 this Weekend

September 22, 2014 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Anomaly 2 3Believe it or not, I actually put down Diablo 3 over the last few days. No, I still haven’t touched Destiny, but it’s because I’m trying to be a good little reviewer. My official Fall sink starts this Friday with Hyrule Warriors, and I have three games to try to finish up and review before then. I turned in one review last night, so just two more to go! Huzzah!

The one I finished was for Anomaly 2, a tower offense game (yes, I said offense, not defense) that was originally a PC game ported to the PS4. I really had a lot of fun playing the game, and that’s all I’m going to say for now until my review goes up. Just…wait until my review before rushing out to buy it. I have a few caveats in there.

And I’m still plugging through Professor Layton v. Phoenix Wright. I have to devote more time to this, the length it’s taking me is ridiculous.  And I am enjoying it, I really am, I just have to hide my copies of Diablo 3 for awhile.

The next game I must review before Friday (hopefully) is Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments. I saw this game at E3, and it looked interesting. It has some moral twists in it as well, which always ropes me in. Plus, I love Sherlock Holmes. I read all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories and novels, and who doesn’t love solving a good mystery? That’s pretty much what both Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright are all about in the first place.

Must wrap all of these Scooby-Doo mysteries so I can enjoy hack-n-slashing it up in Hyrule Warriors and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. This fall is going to be amazing, even if it does break my bank.

Monday Gaming Diary: Still No Destiny

September 15, 2014 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

So. Much. Fingerpointing.

So. Much. Fingerpointing.

I know it completely befuddles numerous friends of mine that I’ve had a copy of Destiny, the hottest game going on right now, since before the game hit store shelves and I haven’t played it once. I told thedailycrate.com that I would review it, but a few things have gotten in the way of pursuing the game further:

  • I’m a big procrastinator.
  • Diablo 3
  • I’m also reviewing Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright.

I am not far from platinuming in D3, so I try to take some time to play that every day because how else will I amass that gold in time? It also didn’t help that my eldest child said he wanted to play Diablo 3 with me, so we created a Monk for him (or as he calls it, a ninja) and I gladly ran around Sanctuary with him. He needed a lot of coaching, and he doesn’t completely understand the cooldown system yet, but he seems to have fun. The couch co-op is definitely a different experience in the game, and I wasn’t prepared for how LEGO-esque it was with the camera and pulling characters in directions. Of course, since he’s 6, he has the attention span of a gnat, so after 45 minutes, he was ready to go play with something else, whereas I was ready to keep going while the baby napped. Ah well. I had a dessert I had to make for a little dinner party anyway.

Last night, I decided it would be a great time to work on my review for Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright while watching the Sunday night football game. Next thing I knew, I looked up at the clock and noticed it was 1:30 a.m. How did that happen?

I haven’t enjoyed the last two Professor Layton games, and this one feels like a call back to the first games, but with a bit of Phoenix Wright gameplay  thrown in. I’ve never played a Phoenix Wright game before, so this has been an entirely new experience for me, and one I’m not as adept at it as I am Professor Layton. I’ve used far more hint coins for help in the courtroom than solving puzzles.

And that’s all I want to play today. I mean, that is what I’m reviewing for work, so surely I could take off the rest of the day for more puzzle solving adventures? I can already hear my boss’s laughter.

inFamous: First Light Mini-Review

September 12, 2014 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Photo Mode is fun!

Photo Mode is fun!

It’s well documented that I’m a super-fan when it comes to the inFamous series, and I absolutely adored inFamous: Second Son. So yes, I was incredibly excited for inFamous: First Light DLC, especially since it starred Fetch, as her neon powers were my absolute favorite of the game. Then the glorious day came at the end of August, and I was left less than fulfilled. The story behind the game is fairly good, and inFamous: Second Son fans will undoubtedly enjoy it.

That said, it is very sad how much the DLC directly copycats the gameplay of Second Son in ways that feel forced and completely strip the vibrancy Seattle had in Second Son. Here’s a snippet of my review from Action Trip:

With any inFamous game, you expect it to follow a very specific formula that the games have pretty much followed from day one: the conduit’s powers will grow over time and each new power can be upgraded, there will be optional mini-games to complete in order to clear out a section of town, and the lead conduit will talk on his or her cell phone a lot. I expected this with Fetch’s story, but I did not expect the mini-games to be so copycat of Second Son. For example, Delsin has the option of destroying hidden security cameras that the DUP have all over Seattle, and likewise, Fetch can take down flying police drones that Shane uses to keep his eye on Seattle and Fetch. In addition, the tagging mini-game has returned, only Fetch uses her neon powers to create the graffiti instead of stencils and spraypaint.

Early on in the game, Fetch releases a megaton of neon gas from one of Seattle’s largest signs, so now pockets of the gas—called lumens—are scattered all over the city. This is what she uses to upgrade her abilities, just like Cole and Delsin used blast shards. Releasing this neon gas also created little hubbles of gas, and if Fetch dashes through them, she gets a speed boost for a short period of time. Naturally these are a perfect fit for racing mini-games, getting away from the police and DUPs, etc. etc. However, what’s odd is how no one in Seattle reacts to these blobs of gas. One would think that seeing a bubble of pink neon gas would elicit a little reaction from the NPCs, especially since neon gas is deadly to breathe.

I gave it a 6/10, as the story is great for fans, but there’s nothing about the story or the gameplay that is striking enough to bring in newcomers to the series. I really expected a lot out of Sucker Punch for this one, and maybe my expectations were too high. However, I’ve played shorter DLC that was far better and more meaningful than this one attempted to be.

Wordless Wednesday: My Current To-Do List

September 10, 2014 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Oh yeah, I’m the epitome of organized and focused. Destiny, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, and Diablo III: the Ultimate Evil Edition (that one is just for me…it’s not a real to-do) just tossed on the floor. I should at least get the 3DS up off the floor…
