The Corner of Randomness: Greetings

January 5, 2017 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

OMG! It’s an article from Chris. Hell must have frozen over. Well, maybe not Hell, but where I live it certainly has. Curse you winter and your frigid below zero temperatures. Anyway, based on the date stamp from my last article, I took quite the summer vacation. Some of that was planned due to extensive travel. Some of that was unforeseen circumstances of life. A bit of warning before I proceed. This will be much more life based than anything having to do with gaming. Hey, it’s my corner. I’ll do what I want!

Now, where did I disappear to the last half of 2016? Well, Keri and I both knew summer was going to be a hectic time. She would have kids at home thanks to summer vacation. I’d be on the road doing various things such as taking pictures, working weddings, and visiting family/friends. It was supposed to be a hiatus that lasted only through the summer. Then life threw some curve balls and I slid into a dark hole that I’m still trying to climb out of.

In August, my wife lost her job. My wife is the money maker here. She supports me. This was a rough blow to us. Some time ago we setup a savings account for just such an occasion, so we have been fine so far. However, there is now uncertainty in the air as we look at the possibility of having to pack and move yet again as the job chase struggle is real.

At the end of August, I was out in Colorado working a wedding with a friend. We had just finished working for the day. It was late. I sat down and checked Facebook for a moment and found a message that my step-father had but a few days left to live. The next morning, I packed up and raced home to snag essentials before racing off to hopefully see my step-father before he shed his mortal coil. That was some of the hardest 20 hours of driving I had ever done. I made it in time to make my peace. The morning after I had arrived, he passed away.

In September my beloved truck blew-up. Well, not literally exploding in a glorious ball of flame and smoke. However, the engine was broken to a point of needing a total replacement. This happened three days before I was slated to leave for Colorado to help lead a photography tour there. Thankfully, I have great friends who jumped to my aid without me even asking for any sort of help. I was flown out to Colorado. A friend rented a truck. The tour continued on. Fun was had. Memories were made. It was a distraction I needed.

The holidays came and went. They were clouded with regret and guilt. Dragged down by the things I cannot change. It was tough, but I’m still here.

Over the course of several months, starting well before any of this craziness happened, I started sliding into my own well of depression. The drinking accelerated. Life happened. I fell deeper and deeper into my sadness. Soon, I was just a walking, talking, hungover liquor store that just struggled to get through the day. Enjoyment ceased to exist in my world.

I’m still here. I’m slowly starting my crawl out of this damned hole. It’s not easy. I’ve almost gone cold turkey on the liquor. I’m fighting my demons. The nights are the hardest. When I finally stop to unwind for the day, I reach for a drink that isn’t there. The darkness fills my head. I fight with my emotions, most times well into the wee hours of the morning. Yet, I continue on.

I don’t really know if there was a real point to telling this story. Maybe I just needed to get it out of my head. Maybe this is just some form of catharsis and a part of getting back to a more healthy life. Either way, it’s now posted and it’s done. Next week I will get back to babbling on about gaming stuff like how AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) is a damned glorious time. You do know AGDQ starts this Sunday, right? No!?! You do now! Here’s to you 2017. May you be vast a improvement to the dumpster fire that was 2016.

Playing with Power: Nintendo NES Classics Review

November 18, 2016 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

I grew up playing a lot of Nintendo. While the Atari 2600 was my first console, it was the NES that totally got me hooked on gaming. The amount of time my friends and I spent sitting on the floor playing some random game my parents rented from the local video store is countless. Prima Games has now tapped into that nostalgia with their Playing with Power: Nintendo NES Classics book. This book comes with all kinds of little tidbits of Nintendo information, as well as guides for some of the most popular NES games.

Prima Games, please make more of these! PLEASE!!!!

The Corner of Randomness: Come on Consoles

May 27, 2016 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

It get slimming down consoles, but now updating them? C'mon!

I get slimming down consoles, but now updating them? C’mon!

This week the rumor mill was working overtime. All the buzz was about a new Xbox One Slim, and then a new Xbox One coming out with better hardware next year. We will know more on these rumors come E3, but this is a bit bothersome for me. Not so much the Xbox One Slim, but a new Xbox One with upgraded hardware such as GPU/CPU/RAM.

We’ve chatted before about the new PS4.5, or PS4K, or whatever name they go with. While I have no intentions of upgrading either my Xbox One or PS4 until I absolutely need to, this new way of pumping out updated hardware is very troublesome to me.

First, I buy a console because it should last me a good amount of time. When companies start upgrading them after a few short years, why would I want to re-invest in the updated console? Sure, you can tell me the updates are minor and you want devs to make games for however many version of a console you have. Yet, let’s be honest here. Developers will eventually be allowed to stop supporting the PS4 and just move on to the PS4.5K.

Secondly, if I have to buy a new console every few years, why wouldn’t I just invest more time and effort into PC gaming? Having to buy a new $400 console every few years is no different than having to buy a $400 GPU for my computer. Also, that new GPU for my PC is already stronger than what is in that updated console.

Lastly, what about all my game installs? So now ever few years I will have to back everything up to transfer it to a new console. The last time I did this on my PS4, it took almost eight hours to complete. Now I have way more games installed on my PS4 and I dread how long it will take to transfer everything to a new system.

Look, I get it. These updates are supposedly to handle 4K video and usher in the era of virtual reality on consoles. I have also read that there might not be a new PlayStation, but rather just updates along the way. Still, this takes away the appeal of consoles to me. If I’m going to be forced to sink money into something every few years, it’ll be my PC as it does a lot more, both with video games and with productivity, than consoles do. So please, Sony and Microsoft, don’t start considering your consoles disposable tech. Don’t be like Apple. Just don’t do it!

SGR Book of the Month 12 – Broforce

May 26, 2016 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

With May just about to come to a close, that can only mean the gang gets together once again to try and talk about Broforce. Of course this also mean too much alcohol gets consumed and only shenanigans and rambling happens by the end. Also, who knew Ross had such a love for Margaritas? This is like some weird new development. With Broforce now behind us, we set our eyes on Party Hard. You know, cuz we are so going to party….really damned hard!

The Corner of Randomness: Summer Vacation

May 20, 2016 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Batman Goes on HolidayIt seems we just skipped right past spring and jump right into summer. At least that is what it feels like here in Iowa. We had maybe a week or two of spring, but the temps are rising and it is already feeling like summer. Not that this is a terrible thing. I mean, it’s way better than blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.

This also means busy season has arrived. Keri gets to take care of kids that are no longer in school. So her life is about to be hectic. That’s on top of her work trips to places like E3. As for me, I get to enjoy countless miles on the road. Heck, as soon as I post this article I’m off to Wisconsin to work on my truck. A week later it is off to Colorado to pick up a few friends, and then we head off to Wyoming to take photos of mountains and such. Good times.

With all this craziness, we won’t be around as much until fall comes back to great us. This also means we have some time to start looking at new ideas for content for SGR. This is where I turn to you. While we have a few ideas in the oven, mainly new video content, what would you like to see more of? What features would you like us to look at and possibly implement down the road?

I have a lot of road to cover over the next few months. Thus, I’ll have plenty of time to contemplate new ideas and how to implement them. Exciting times are ahead. Until then, I need to go pack and hit the road.
