SGR Coffee Break 42- Extra Life Wrap-up Part 1

November 12, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Keri rocked her portion of the Extra Life event that happened on Saturday, November 7. She got new tattoos, tried out streaming for the first time, and played new games. It sounds like she had one heck of a great time. Me, well I was working a wedding so I had to delay my participation in this great event. Thanks to all who donated and pushed us well past our team goal!

SGR Book of the Month 7 – Until Dawn

November 11, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Time to grab your favorite adult beverage and listen to three drunk guys talk about Until Dawn. That’s right, Blake, Ross, and myself finally sit down to talk about the game that Ross picked for the October edition of the SGR Book of the Month. Blake may have noped the fuck out of the game prematurely, but Ross and I conquered Until Dawn and loved every minute of it. We then make the executive decision to delay my “book” in favor of allowing the three of us to go balls deep into the wasteland known as Fallout 4! Oh the things that happen when you drink.

The Corner of Randomness: Unexpected Gems

November 6, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

untildawnFor the SGR Book of the Month choice this month, Ross picked out Until Dawn. This is a game I had not heard of until Ross made it the game we would play for this month’s “book.” I didn’t see a lot of people streaming it on Twitch.TV, nor were any or my social media feeds really hyped for this game. I honestly wasn’t expecting that much from this title.

Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. The game totally rocked my world. I enjoyed my first tenish hours with it. I completed my first playthrough in two evenings. The story was interesting. Well, that is if you like generic horror movies. The audio just blew me away. It was an experience that I totally enjoyed.

That got me thinking about other games that became unexpected gems. Another recent game that caught me by surprise was The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. That game might be short, but man what an experience it is. The world is so beautifully constructed. The story is solid. A few of the puzzles brought on a good challenge. I went into the game with some pretty level expectations. I left just amazed at what I had played. Hell, I haven’t even deleted it off of my PS4, and I’m so out of friggin’ hard drive space!

Some other unexpected gems include Elite: Dangerous, Pillars of Eternity, Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons, Journey, and Demon’s Souls. Sure some of these games are “big” titles, but I went into all of them with the thought that they’d be fun for a bit, but then dwindle in their entertainment value and just end up fading into a distant memory. All of these games, and so many more, have left big impressions on me. Either because I become stupidly addicted to them, or providing a story so powerful that I was left dealing with the aftermath for a few days. That, lovely readers, is the power of those unexpected gems in the video game world!

SGR Coffee Break 41 – The Potential Stress of Choice in Games

November 5, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

While playing Until Dawn, I was texting Keri about my decision to try and kill everyone off. This led to a small chat about how choices in games can not only be stressful, but how they can also lead to not wanting to complete a game. I’m looking at you, Mass Effect. We decided to expand on our simple IM conversation and dive deeper into this rabbit hole. Keri explains why decisions stress her out and I dive into what I had to do to finally have a good time with games where my choices affected the ending. You get to choose if you listen to our exhausted ramblings, or look at our lovely faces. Go ahead, pick on option…….and go!

The Corner of Randomness: So Much Unboxing!

October 30, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

I received my Arcade Block and Marvel Collector Corps boxes the same day. With the goody box from Keri arriving the same day as well, it was like Christmas had arrived early. Yeah, I tore into these little cardboard vaults of goodness. I even recorded it. Cuz that’s what you do these days. Enjoy not one, but two unboxing videos!
