The Corner of Randomness: Capcom Cup

December 4, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Capcom CupThis weekend the PlayStation Experience is taking place in San Francisco. The highlight of this event, for me, is that this is the venue for the Capcom Cup. What is the Capcom Cup you ask? Well, last year Capcom decided to take the plunge and make an actual tournament for Street Fighter players. I guess they saw what Riot did for League of Legends and had to jump on the esport hype train.

Capcom Cup is the end to a yearlong battle for points and rankings. Players have been earning points at various FGC (Fighting Game Community) events, like EVO, to earn their spots in this tournament. The field started out vast and promising, but now it is narrowed down to 32 of the best Ultra Street Fighter IV players from around the world.

What is great about this event is that Capcom is really putting some effort to draw people into this tournament. The person who walks away in first place after the battle royal on Sunday will be able to pocket $120,000. Now I know that is like chump change when you compare it to something like League of Legends, but remember, one person gets that coin from the Capcom Cup where as in the MOBA scene it is split across a team of five or more players. Second place isn’t too shabby either as that person will earn $60,000. These earnings are on top of whatever they have made at various events throughout the year. Also remember, most people play more than one fighting game as well and so the earnings just compound even further.

I’m excited to see what happens this Sunday. I really hope we don’t see another stick malfunction like we did at EVO, as that was just stupid heartbreaking. Will this become a battle between Momochi and Infiltration? Will some unknown come out of the cracks to blow us all away? We will soon find out. It’ll be fun to see just how much Capcom learned from their first event last year.

The Corner of Randomness: Extra Life is Done

November 24, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Extra LifeWell, Extra Life 2015 is now in the books for me. I spread my 24, which turned into 38, hours of gaming across four glorious days. I did this so I could have fun while still doing adult things like working. Honestly, this is probably the best way to tack Extra Life and I’ll continue to do it this way if I decide to do the event in the future.

I started out by playing Life is Strange. This is a game that Keri told me to play thanks to her donation. I already knew that Keri very much enjoyed this title, so I was looking forward to it. The bonus for this is that I also setup my PS4 so I could stream the game and Keri could watch to see how my decisions changed the story. I streamed it all but Episode 3, in which I was playing while tackling dinner and talking to my wife. You can watch the replays, some are a bit of a drunken stream, on my Twitch.TV station right here: http://www.twitch.tv/starvenmarven

On Friday, I played some Star Wars: Battlefront, then switched over to some Tales of Zesteria. I closed out the night by ending my first playthrough of Life is Strange. That game really was good. I also dug the soundtrack for it so much. Seriously, check it out.

Saturday was my MMO day. I loaded up World of Warcraft and continued working on my Worgen Priest. I finally hit level 60 and even secured my flying mount. Only 40 more levels to grind out. When I worked on supper, I fired up Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and got that patching. Food consumed, it was off to play some FFXIV. I admit, it was really difficult to get back into this game after taking almost a year off from it. Most of my six hours playing it were spent relearning controls and what the heck I was doing. When I finally logged off, I was slowly getting back into the groove of things.

Sunday was a day of randomness. I just played anything that interested me. I played some more FFXIV, WoW, and even some Star Wars: Battlefront. What consumed the bulk of my night was Tales of Zestiria. As I’m working on the strategy guide, I figured that was a good way to close out the event. I only planned to play for two hours, but ended up rocking the game for almost six hours. If you liked any of the previous Tales games before, this is a great addition to the series. Check it out.

Here it is Monday. I didn’t hit my Extra Life goal of $500. Part of that makes me sad. Then I was reminded this morning why I probably didn’t reach my goal. This morning I saw three new GoFundMe campaigns stroll across my Facebook feed. This has really driven me to some disinterest in future Extra Life events. It’s not that I don’t enjoy doing the event, and I do so love helping out sick kids. However, I just can’t compete with the constant barrage of people hitting social media with their hands out looking for money. I believe that constant stream of people asking for money is a big part of why for the first time in four events, I didn’t hit my goal. As much as I want to do my part to boost the signal of this great event, I just feel…dirty for joining that river of people constantly blasting friends walls asking for money.

Will I do Extra Life again next year? Most likely. Will I sign-up and join the stream of people asking for money? Probably not. I will most likely just donate to friends who are also doing the stream and just send out a status or two that I’m doing the event in spirit. Then again, Extra Life 2016 is a year away and my thoughts on this might change by then. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Until then, thanks to all those who donated to me, stopped by when I was streaming, and those who just passed on links to Team SGR. We all helped to make the lives of sick children just a little bit better. That is something to feel good about!

The Corner of Randomness: Extra Life Hype

November 13, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Extra LifeI hope you’re not sick of hearing about Extra Life, because here I come with my own article. Sadly, I could not participate in the event on November 7th due to being the lead photographer at a wedding on that same day. I am still planning to participate in the event however, just two weeks later.

I’ve debated how to handle my participation in this wonderful event. I am currently thinking that instead of a 24hr marathon, I’ll be breaking the event into chunks. Why, because it allows me to have more fun with it. I’ll be streaming some Life is Strange on Thursday (11/19/2015) so that Keri can watch the stream. I’m thinking Friday night (11/20/2015) will be an adult beverage kind of night, and that’ll make games like Mortal Kombat X, a bit more entertaining! Saturday (11/21/2015) will be an MMO kind of day where I play World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV all day. I’ll wrap-up on Sunday (11/22/2015) with some retro games and various other games that I just feel like throwing into the mix. It should be a great four days of gaming.

Yeah, I know it’s supposed to be 24hrs of straight gaming, but I have done that for three years in a row. This year I just want to have fun with it, and that is what I intend to do.

There are also a few goodies for those who donate to me. For $25 you are automatically entered to win a limited edition photo. There are a lot more details on how this works, and I’ll go over those with the winner. Blake has also graciously donated a boat load of Steam codes for various games. Again, a $25 donation gets ya a code of your choosing. The list of games he has generously offered up is:

  • AirBuccaneers,
  • The Bard’s Tale,
  • Bastion,
  • Batman™: Arkham Asylum GOTY,
  • Batman™: Arkham City GOTY,

The Corner of Randomness: Unexpected Gems

November 6, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

untildawnFor the SGR Book of the Month choice this month, Ross picked out Until Dawn. This is a game I had not heard of until Ross made it the game we would play for this month’s “book.” I didn’t see a lot of people streaming it on Twitch.TV, nor were any or my social media feeds really hyped for this game. I honestly wasn’t expecting that much from this title.

Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. The game totally rocked my world. I enjoyed my first tenish hours with it. I completed my first playthrough in two evenings. The story was interesting. Well, that is if you like generic horror movies. The audio just blew me away. It was an experience that I totally enjoyed.

That got me thinking about other games that became unexpected gems. Another recent game that caught me by surprise was The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. That game might be short, but man what an experience it is. The world is so beautifully constructed. The story is solid. A few of the puzzles brought on a good challenge. I went into the game with some pretty level expectations. I left just amazed at what I had played. Hell, I haven’t even deleted it off of my PS4, and I’m so out of friggin’ hard drive space!

Some other unexpected gems include Elite: Dangerous, Pillars of Eternity, Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons, Journey, and Demon’s Souls. Sure some of these games are “big” titles, but I went into all of them with the thought that they’d be fun for a bit, but then dwindle in their entertainment value and just end up fading into a distant memory. All of these games, and so many more, have left big impressions on me. Either because I become stupidly addicted to them, or providing a story so powerful that I was left dealing with the aftermath for a few days. That, lovely readers, is the power of those unexpected gems in the video game world!

The Corner of Randomness: So Much Unboxing!

October 30, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

I received my Arcade Block and Marvel Collector Corps boxes the same day. With the goody box from Keri arriving the same day as well, it was like Christmas had arrived early. Yeah, I tore into these little cardboard vaults of goodness. I even recorded it. Cuz that’s what you do these days. Enjoy not one, but two unboxing videos!
