The Corner of Randomness: It Worked

July 28, 2017 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Well, I can say it worked. Taking a guilt free day to just relax, play a few games, and not worry about adulting worked out well. It worked so well in fact, I am doing it again today.

For today, I plan to play more Elder Scrolls Online as I am very much enjoying that game. A bit later, I’ll jump onto some Warframe and probably play that the rest of the day. I downloaded the game on the PS4 to play with some friends. So far, that seems to be the best choice as gaming with friends is way more fun than trying to find groups to game with.

Today also marks the start of Defend the North. It’s no EVO in terms of hype levels. Yet, it’s another fighting game tournament to watch and enjoy. That should be a good time. However, I’ll probably only catch some of it today and try to catch the finals on Sunday. Thank goodness for VODs!

Keri is gone for another week yet. So next week expect a bit more of my shenanigans. The Elder Scrolls Oninline: Morrowind guide is pretty much done and ready for review. I’m missing some of the files, so I’ll get that posted up once she returns from her trip. Spoiler: the guide is a solid 3/5. Hopefully Keri is having a ton of fun and enjoying some well-deserved R&R.

That does it for me. Time to finish this coffee, hit the store for some snacks and weekend food, and then venture off into the virtual game worlds. This one day of guilt freeness is pretty badass!

Gaming Diary: Warframe Again

July 24, 2017 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Well, Keri is away for two weeks. Something about traveling abroad, celebrating a birthday, and having fun with a friend. I dunno. It sounds a lot like slacking to me.

As for me, I spent a bit of time playing some games with friends that I haven’t gamed with in a few months. Mainly because we are all adults and have a ton going on. Anyway, our time together began with Elder Scrolls Online. We all made new characters so we could start in the same area. We quested for a bit, got a few levels, and had some good times. Yet, adulting would catch me and I would have to run off to handle more house work.

Over the two days we all got to hang out in virtual lands, we played a bit of ESO, a bit of Trove, and a whole lot of Warframe. At some point on Friday morning, my friends had asked me if I had played a game called Warframe, and I responded with a “Yeah, it’s pretty fun. It’s just stupid grindy!” response. Well, that didn’t stop them from getting hooked.

We ended up playing a ton of Warframe from that point forward. I helped them get acclimated to the various mechanics and systems in the game. Then the grinding for blueprints kicked in. One friend ended up just playing Warframe the rest of the weekend. He was pretty addicted to it. Ya know, it does have its claws in me as well.

Now I have something free, fun, and sci-fi oriented to take up my time after I tackle the to-do list. Speaking of which, this post is the end of my list for the day. Guess it’s now time to go ninja slice some baddies!

The Corner of Randomness: Taking a Day to Game

July 21, 2017 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

I’ve been ridiculously busy working on my house with the hopes of getting it ready to be sold in a few months. This has led to very little time for gaming. It sucks because constantly going can really wear a person out after a full week of going nonstop. So, I’ve decided that every Friday will be a recovery kind of day.

Today is the first of the recovery day shenanigans. I recently managed to get a few friends into Elder Scrolls Online. We played for a bit last night, but my crap internet took a beating when a thunderstorm rolled through. Hopefully today will be a bit better and we can all jump into the game together and play for a few hours. This should also help with me in finishing the strategy guide for a possible review next week.

If my internet decides to be a pain, I’ll most likely just jump into some DOOM. Mainly because DOOM sprawled across three monitors is pretty friggin sweet! Or maybe I’ll be smart and start on a game from my backlog of shame. There are just so many options!

I do hope this new day dedicated to chilling will pan out. If nothing else, the sleeping in this morning was totally awesome! Now to fire up the PS4 and go roam around Morrowind!

Gaming Diary: EVO Hangover

July 18, 2017 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

EVO 2017

Last week I had post-GDQ blues and now I have an EVO hangover. Scheduling EVO the week after SGDQ was rather genius, because it wasn’t long before I had streaming goodness again. But now it’s over and I fell a void in my soul without watching amazing streaming. Is there another speedrunning tournament I can find? Maybe I could catch streams of some of the speedrunners or FGC participants? Or I guess I could catch up on The Americans and Archer.

But they’re not the same. They’re not the same as these all day FGC tournaments. I’ve been spoiled, and now I have to find another way to keep me entertained while working.

As such, not much gaming happened once again. I did play some more Horizon: Zero Dawn, which was fantastic as always. One afternoon, I spent two hours doing nothing but stealth-killing machines. It never stopped being fun, and I was able to craft some nice weapons and armor from my murder spree. Of course if I spend all gaming sessions doing just that, I’ll never finish the game. Oh well, there are worse things in life.

I’ve made very little progress in A Link to the Past as well. I finished Thieves Town with little problems, although I was thoroughly disappointed that Blind the Thief didn’t have an insect pun when he appeared. I was spoiled in the Randomizer tournament, which had Blind say before the fight, “I hate insect puns. They really bug me.” That was so much better than what he actually said. I’ve also made my way through half of the Ice Palace. If I actually bring some fairies and potions with me, perhaps I’ll finish it my next try. Or not. I’ve learned from Skull Woods that it might take me 20 tries to finish a dungeon. At least this time I really like the Ice Palace, especially with the killer penguins. I still hate Skull Woods.

I will be doing some more gaming very soon as I leave for Japan this Saturday for two weeks! During that time I leave you all in the very capable hands of Chris, who will even have a strategy guide review ready. I know, crazy, right?

The Corner of Randomness: Time to EVO!

July 14, 2017 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

Well, EVO is finally upon us. This is essentially the Super Bowl of the fighting game community (FGC). Players of all walks of fighting game backgrounds descend upon Las Vegas to put their skills to the test. There will be upsets. I can guarantee you that there will be pop-offs and tea-bagging galore. Winners will be crowned, money will be won, and bragging rights bestowed upon the best players.

What makes this EVO so special is that there are three pro tours happening. Injustice 2, Tekken 7, and Street Fighter V are all at EVO with premier tour events. While Street Fighter V is still king when it comes to registrants, it’s nice to see Injustice 2 and Tekken 7 getting some love. I do still hope that one day the Street Fighter games will be dethroned as king.

If you get only one day to watch, then Sunday is certainly the day to do so. This is when several games come to an end with their Top 8 runs. While I’d have enjoyed the Injustice 2 finals happening here, they take place on Saturday night. I wonder if Sonic Fox will dominate as he usually does. Then again, the hype level just gets that much more if he comes in second or third.

While I’m busy working on my house, and working on photography classes for the new studio space, I’ll be glued to Twitch.TV as much as I can. Yet, I’ll be sad once Sunday draws to an end. It’s a long wait until Capcom Cup later this year, and an even longer wait until AGDQ rolls around in January. Keri and I might need to form a support group for those of us about to go through streaming hype withdraws.
