Monday Gaming Diary: Happy Memorial Day!

May 25, 2015 By Keri Honea 4 Comments

teen-titans-go-03
I hope everyone in the US is having a great Memorial Day holiday! Memorial Day is the day where we remember those soldiers who fell in battle. It’s not to be confused with Veterans’ Day, which honors those who served in a war. Veterans aren’t dead. My husband is a veteran. We get a little testy when people honor him on Memorial Day because he obviously isn’t dead.

But while that may be the purpose behind the day, it’s a national holiday where most people are off work. Schools are closed, every federal building is closed, and most people plan for rather big barbecues and outdoor grilling sessions. My family traveled to our locale to help us celebrate the oldest child’s 7th birthday. We grilled lots of steak, fish, broccoli, and corn on the cob. And yes, there was cake. I’m going to have to go running for a week to wear off these calories.

Great weekend, but zero gaming was had outside of my iPad. My parents always stay in my office, so no Witcher 3. My son was very disappointed we couldn’t play Diablo 3 together. In hindsight, I could have played with my 3DS and tried to finish Bravely Default, or at least get further, but I was content zoning out on the couch with a book, playing the Mortal Kombat X Kard Game, or watching my Dad argue about politics. Plus, we might have drunk so much wine during the day, I crashed before 10 every night.

This week I plan to get into a lot of The Witcher 3. I’m going to Atlanta to attend Momocon with one of my best friends, and I’ve already decided that I’m going to pay to check a bag so I can haul my PlayStation 4 with me. Seriously, that GAEMS case is one of the best gaming investments I have ever made.

I probably should also attempt to play Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn since the Heavensward expansion releases next month and I’m supposed to review it for work. I’m really looking forward to this break in game releases this summer. I’m looking forward to it even more now that I have cut down on my Stack of Shame. Best. Decision. Ever. (Next to the GAEMS case.)

The Corner of Randomness: Destiny and a Virus

May 21, 2015 By Chris Nitz 1 Comment

My precious

My precious

Well, I’ve caught a cold. It’s been bad enough that it has knocked me out of action for the last few days. While some might see this as a bummer, I see it as an opportunity to just veg out on video games. While I should be playing Bloodbourne to work on this sexy new strategy guide I have for review, I’m stuck in an addiction vortex known as Destiny.

Getting back into Destiny was an odd circumstance. One night a few weeks ago, I was playing Grand Theft Auto V with one of my brothers and we noticed another brother (I have four brothers) playing Destiny. We joined up on a party chat and began talking crap to one another. Eventually, we switched out from GTA to join our lone Vex hunting bro.

Well, this opened an addiction. I don’t know what changed from when I first played Destiny, but it’s got its hooks in me right now. I’ve since bought both expansions and have taken my character from level 20 to 30. I admit it, I’m having a ton of fun. I’m even getting to game with Blake now.

I think what makes this so entertaining for me is playing with brothers I rarely ever see. Also, being able to play a game with Blake is rather nice since we no longer podcast on a weekly basis. I essentially finish doing Destiny stuff with my brother(s) and about that time Blake will jump on. While it’s not the same as sitting on the couch, drinking adult beverages, and joking around, it’s close enough.

So here I sit. I’m hopped up on cold meds, drowning my body in orange juice, and getting so sick of chicken noodle soup. Yet, when House of Wolves released yesterday, I got to enjoy a 12-hour marathon of Destiny goodness. I must be delusional, however, as I think my PS4 just turned itself on. I think I’m gonna go see if it needs company. Now where did I leave that DayQuil bottle?

Monday Gaming Diary: Cleared out the Stack of Shame

May 18, 2015 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

Unamused+vault+boy_7b71a7_5150636I fell for a particular bit of clickbait last week and read (or skimmed) through an article about how to become a happier gamer. Most of the suggestions I laughed at and rolled my eyes, but one really stuck out at me, and it was to buy fewer games. In my case, as a game reviewer, this one isn’t that possible. Technically, I rarely buy games, but that’s not the point of the recommendation; it’s about cutting down the need to play so many games. After reading this one tip, I looked over at my own stack of shame and felt that stressed out sensation creep up the back of my neck and head. As much as I would love to play and finish every single one of the games in my stack of shame, I know it’s not possible. Maybe if I didn’t review games and guides it would be possible, but I don’t think even then it would be since I want to play the newest hot items on the market.

I’ll hear friends recommend things, or I’ll see the Interwebs praise one game I hadn’t heard of, and I’ll get interested and buy them. Which means either that gets added to the stack or something else I was playing gets added.

This weekend was high time I actually cleaned up my office (it’s not just because my parents are coming in town either), and as I was picking up all of the games, guides, and random scraps of paper that were littered across my floor, I forced myself to take a long, hard look at my stack of shame. Sure, I want to play all of those games eventually. Maybe. Well, it would be nice if I could. But so many are monster RPGs. Others are LEGO games that will command hours from me because I’ll “have” to try to get that Platinum trophy in them. And others just never hit my radar that I need to play them when I actually get some free time.

It’s time to re-prioritize.

Most of my stack was removed and put back on the shelves. Since they’re PS3 and Xbox 360 games, there’s little to no point in even trying to sell them, although there are a few I should sell as I know I’ll never try them or finish them: Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City. Dragon’s Dogma seemed so amazing, but ugh, I know I’ll never get around to it with all of the RPGs I really really want to play, including those I know I want to play again. coughDragonAgeOriginscough

Most of the LEGO games were also removed at this time. Only LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and LEGO Batman 3 made the cut. These are more important, and if I get around to it, I’ll try to Platinum in the rest, but I’m not going to worry about it anymore. LEGO Jurassic World will release in June, and well, yeah I’ll try to Platinum in that one too. I’ll most likely be reviewing it for work and the strategy guide.

Fallout 3 and The God of War Saga also got shelved. I don’t even think I’ve removed the games from their wrappers. I feel doubly guilty about that because they were gifts.

So what remained?

I have the following games in my official stack of shame/pursuit of Platinum:

  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
  • LEGO Batman 3
  • Resistance 3
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue
  • Diablo III
  • Diablo III: the Ultimate Evil Edition

I can’t explain why Resistance 3 made the cut other than I loved the first two games a lot and I want to see where the story goes. Assassin’s Creed Rogue is there because I love AC games and I heard this was one of the best from the last generation of consoles. And the original D3 is in there because I only need 2.3 million gold to go to Platinum in it. Mmmmm I can just taste it.

The Corner of Randomness: Remembering My First Games

May 15, 2015 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

So old....SO GOOD!

So old….SO GOOD!

This week there were a lot of first game memories flying around social media. I don’t know what sparked it all, but it got me feeling all nostalgic. Over the last few days, I’ve been reminiscing on some of my favorite games. I also started to think about what my first game purchases were across the various gaming platforms as they released. So today, let’s walk down memory lane.

My video game addiction began with Pitfall on the Atari 2600. My brother and I were visiting our aunt, uncle, and cousins in Wisconsin. I remember we walked in the door and found my uncle and cousins playing Pitfall. I was in awe of what I saw. I wanted to play. I sucked, but damn if I didn’t have a ball. My brother and I would later inherit their Atari 2600 as our own due to my cousins upgrading to the Nintendo Entertainment System.

We played the Atari so much, but the allure of the NES was strong. We finally convinced our parents to splurge and get us this new-fangled system. We brought it home from Meijer (grocery store in Michigan) and hooked it up. Our first game was Duck Hunt. I remember this fondly because it was the one, and only, time the whole family sat on the couch and played video games together. It’s still one of those memories I hold onto dearly.

Time crept on and I would amass a decent collection of NES games. However, like all things technology, a new console would emerge. The Super Nintendo was that new console. The first game I played on that sucker was Super Mario World, and man would I play this game to death. It was just so colorful, and that music, damn man. This was the future. I still go back on a rare occasion and play this game. I can say, it has stood the test of time rather well.

The SNES would hold my heart for many years. Yet, Nintendo would up the game again with the Nintendo 64. This also ushered in the stupidly expensive cartridge games. I pinched my pennies and brought home a shiny new N64 with Turok. Not only did the game look badass, but I also had this controller with a bulging peripheral that rumbled. It was so crazy and new. MIND BLOWN!

Right around the same time the N64 released, a new comer would enter the video game world. That new kid on the block was the PlayStation by Sony. It was so foreign. It used cds instead of cartridges. It wasn’t until I played it at a friend’s house that I caught the need for this stupidly expensive ($300 at the time was ridiculous) console. I would once again save up my money and buy the PS1 and Crash Bandicoot. My love for Sony consoles had begun!

Why can't this franchise be reborn?

Why can’t this franchise be reborn?

Forward time a few years and I’m now in college. It looked as though the console wars would now be between Sony and Nintendo, but Sega had one last gift to give gamers. They brought us the Dreamcast. My first game with this system was Crazy Taxi. I’ve never had so much fun being a taxi driver as I did with that game. My friends and I played the bejesus out of Crazi Taxi, Soul Calibur, and Power Stone. Man I miss that system.

We now arrive at the greatness that is the PlayStation 2. The fun thing about this system is that you could actually buy a few of the launch games two weeks before the system even released. I know this because I had Street Fighter EX3 sitting on my desk and I could do nothing with it for two weeks. It taunted me. It mocked me. I WANTED TO PLAY IT SO BADLY! That was the longest two weeks of my life, but they passed and I would partake in the glory that was the PS2!

The PS2 would become one of my longest held consoles. However, it would now sit beside the brand new Nintendo GameCube. This would also mark the start of consoles being so hyped up that they would become a pain in the ass to find at launch. I christened my GameCube with a strange game knows as Super Monkey Ball. I have no idea what it was about that game, but man did I play it a lot. I’d challenge friends to see who could beat hard levels the fastest. This entertainment was only amplified by adult beverages.

Around the same time the GameCube released, we had another new entrant into the world of video games. This time, Microsoft would dip their toes into the pool with the Xbox. I actually won my first Xbox thanks to a Taco Bell giveaway. I received an Xbox and Halo…FOR FREE! I was hesitant to give Microsoft credit, but once I heard that title screen for Halo, I was a lost cause. I was once again blown away by just how far we have come in the video game world. The Xbox had won me over!

I like it when you talk dirty to me, Marcus!

I like it when you talk dirty to me, Marcus!

I would move to Georgia before investing in a new game console. I had come to love my PS2, GameCube, Xbox setup. Yet, Microsoft would again destroy my reality with the Xbox 360 and Gears of War. I remember just saying “Eff it,” grabbing my roommate and going to the store to buy this setup. It was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We would then spend the next four days playing Gears and eating leftovers. It was one of the best holidays ever!

Next stop is Missouri. This is where I’d convince my wife, then fiancé, that we needed a PlayStation 3. She would deny me this new console until one day we were walking around Circuit City (right before they became nothing more than a memory) and I showed her Little Big Planet. I told her of the stupid fun we could have in that game as we could play together. Well, she would cave and we brought home a PS3 and LBP. It’ proved to be a great investment as we spent plenty of hours playing various PS3 games together!

And now we have today. I would once again have to convince my wife that we “needed” a new console. It took some doing, but I would eventually snag a PlayStation 4 with Destiny. I have also snagged a Wii U as well, and my first game on that would be Pikmin 3. I have both of these consoles hooked up to my computer monitor and enjoy them both immensely.

You know, as I look back through this article and remember all the fun times I’ve had, one thing stands out clear as day. We as video gamers have a lot to be thankful for. In my 28 years of playing video games, I have explored countless virtual worlds, slaughtered who knows how many bad guys, saved the world dozens of times, raced thousands of virtual miles, broken more controllers than I care to admit, sold and then re-bought various consoles far too many times, and racked up an ungodly amount of time with a controller in my hands. You know what? I’d totally do it all over again and not change a damn thing!

Monday Gaming Diary: Procrastinashun

May 11, 2015 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

cakebuttI had work to do this weekend, but I decided to procrastinate completely and play games I’ve already played. More specifically, I played Broken Age on the Vita. I know, I know, I played it on the PC, but the allure of Trophies was too much for me. I already know what I’m doing this time, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to speed through the game, right?

And that was true; I finished the game in less than two days. When you know how to solve the puzzles, you can do it in a very efficient manner, which greatly cuts down on the backtracking. I had hoped that the photos I took of the Hexipal puzzle solutions would provide the exact same solutions, but the solutions either change with every playthrough or with different platforms. All of the notes I had made the first time around were nearly useless, but at least I was prepared.

And really, I think that’s the only way to play Broken Age, at least in the last half. Although, I have to admit, after playing it again from start to finish, Tim Schaefer was 100% dead on with his recommendation to replaying the first act before diving into the second. There are an obscene number of hints for act 2 puzzle solutions in the first act. Maybe I only noticed them because I knew of the solutions, but I think having them in the forefront of my mind would have helped immensely.

I didn’t get the Platinum Trophy, but with the Trophies in the list, it will take at least two playthroughs to get them all. Not sure if I even want to try, as I have no idea how to finish the whole game in less than an hour, but there are so many hidden Trophies I’m very curious about.

Yes, I have a Trophy problem, I admit it. I am going to MomoCon at the end of this month, so maybe that will be a good time to play it over and over. Or maybe I’ll finish Bravely Default. I kind of want to finish that sometime this year (with everything else, I admit). I think conventions and airplane time will be the best opportunities to get a move on with that one. I think I’m nearly done; or that could be a Square Enix trick right before they open up 40 more hours of gameplay. Wouldn’t surprise me.

In other non-procrastinating news, we got a review copy of the Bloodborne strategy guide! I am dropping that in the mail to Chris today so he can get to work on that as soon as he can. I’ve pretty much given up on trying to find time for Pillars of Eternity because I’m a horrible person, but I will not drop the ball for The Witcher 3. It helps that I’m not reviewing that game for work.

And speaking of reviewing games for work, I need to get on that Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. I hear it has a Grammar Nazi! DLC of the Year, right there.
