Strategy Guide New Year’s Resolutions

January 5, 2015 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

Funny-new-years-resolutions-calvin-and-hobbsWe’re back! Did you miss us? I was off the grid pretty much the entire time, and I can’t lie; it was super, super nice. I also did a lot of work on my backlog, something that Chris and I will discuss on the Coffee Break podcast this week. Oh yeah, that’s coming back too!

So while I was playing my backlog and NOT working on the, uh, three or four strategy guides I have left over from 2014 that I have not reviewed, I pondered on my own particular resolutions for reviewing strategy guides for SGR. I hope I can get Chris to ponder the same for his Corner of Randomness this week. (*poke poke, nudge nudge*)

While I’d like to say I’ll resolve to not start a game until I finish reviewing the guide for the one I’m working on, there’s no way I could possibly make that realistic with my current job and the release schedule for games. I just can’t. It’s a pretty idea to have, and sure, I do need to get better about finishing one thing before starting the next, but that’s not always feasible, no matter how much I may want to. So here is my big resolution:

Will not start on any 2015 games or any new games from backlog until 2014 games and guides are finished.

Is that a bit of a cop-out? A little. And it is easy since the first guide of the year is Dying Light and of course I’m not touching that one. It does also help that none of the games I’m really excited about or will review hit until late February.

But still…this means no starting Dragon Age Inquisition or really anything else until I finish Shadow of Mordor, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Far Cry 4, Sunset Overdrive, and LEGO Batman 3, and four of those are for guide review purposes. That’s a huge undertaking.

I’m also going to resolve to do one more thing, even if it kills me:

Finish 2015 games and guide reviews in 2015.

I don’t want to add to my stack of shame any more than I seem to do every year. It seems inevitable, but it doesn’t mean I like it or I want to keep that trend going.

And of course, I’m going to resolve to finish The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. It wouldn’t be a gaming New Year’s resolution without me swearing to finish a Legend of Zelda game for the year. I did one last year, so maybe I can do one or two this year. Crazy, right?

So. Do you have any gaming resolutions for 2015?

Monday Gaming Diary: Wrapping up the End of the Year with Diablo 3, Dragon Age, and Guide Reivews

December 22, 2014 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

diablo-3-memeIt’s hard to believe that we’ve come to the end of 2014! In fact, tomorrow will be the last post of the year, and we’ll be back ready to kick more strategy guide ass in 2015. Which also means that I’ll wrap up the last few strategy guides I have outstanding for 2014 in January. I hate that that happens, but I can only do so much on my own. I probably could have delegated a couple of these out, but that’s just crazy talk. I wanted these!

The kids are at their grandparents until Christmas Eve, so that means I have two kid-free nights. That also means that finishing Dragon Age: Origins or die trying starts TONIGHT. I think I have a decent save I can fall back on to get myself properly prepared, and if not, well, I’ll be replaying a bit more than planned. It happens to the best of us. You have no idea how much I’m looking forward to sticking a fork in this game so I can move on to Awakening.

And speaking of games I’m ready to be done with, I’m ready to Platinum in the PS3 version of Diablo 3. I’ve had a lot of issues getting motivated to play that one, and while it mostly has to do with the lack of time, I’m also bored. I’m so tired of running through the game over and over with the same maxed out character. So I had a thought; I have a Barbarian that I originally started with this game, so why I don’t I play with that character and run through all the way to Inferno with that one? Then keep going with new characters until I reach the 5 million gold obtained trophy? Then, THEN I can import those characters into my PS4 version and I’ll be well on the road to getting all of the characters to level 70, which is another trophy. It’s all about getting these Platinum trophies, as dumb as it is. I see that these are obtainable, so I must have them. I MUST!

But as for wrapping up as many strategy guides as we can before 2014 comes to a close, Chris has turned in his review for Super Smash Bros. and I finally have my review for Skylanders Trap Team. That one is so timely, I know, but at least it’s getting done. Better late than never and all that jazz.

I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season! We’ll be ready to rock 2015 with this wonderful roll we’ve been on, including more podcasts! Chris and I are having a blast with those, and we hope you all are loving them just as much.

The Corner of Randomness: My Favorite Gaming Experience for 2014

December 17, 2014 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

So much fun!

So much fun!

I’ve had a lot of gaming experiences this year. Just thinking back, with the PC/PS3/PS4 versions of Diablo 3, I can’t even begin to count the hours of time I have sunk into that game. I’m currently racing around in both The Crew and Mario Kart 8 thanks to the new Hyrule DLC! There there are the countless hours I have sunk into RPGs like Dark Souls 2 and Tales of Xillia 2. 2014, you have been such a great year to for me.

Thinking back on it, I’ve had a good amount of gaming experiences. Yet, there is one that I still look back on and laugh, and that is when I was playing TowerFall Ascension. For those that might not know it, Keri and I joined Blake and Ross for a few rounds of this game during our Extra Life event. Maybe it was because we were exhausted. Maybe it was all the junk food coursing through my veins. Whatever it was, I have not laughed so much in such a short period of time. You know, maybe it was actually because we were all sitting around the television, controllers in our hands, doing battle and talking smack. It was almost like being a kid again and fighting with my best friend in Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

While I have visited a good amount of digital worlds, nothing makes me smile like that morning with the four of us. It makes me wonder what 2015 will bring. There are plenty of games on the horizon that I am excited for, but what will give me that one memorable experience that I’ll most likely take to my grave. Which will make me look back in a few years, smile, and be thankful that I got to enjoy that moment? Only time will tell, but I’m pretty sure that moment will be complemented by good friends.

What about you? What was that one video game experience that made 2014 a great year for you?

Monday Gaming Diary: Games I wish I could have played this year

December 15, 2014 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

overcomeoverwhelmI really hope that games publishers don’t do this every year, where they keep so many months dearth and then cram everything into late October and early November. I really want to have time to play nearly all of the games through completion that are released in the same year, and not have the mad rush where I realize that things just ain’t gonna get done. It affects not only what I vote on for Game of the Year for work, but I hate not getting all of the strategy guides reviewed that I wanted to get done either.

There are two games I have purchased but have not been able to touch at all, and both make me extremely sad (and you can’t blame my obsession on Diablo 3 for either, as I haven’t touched that game in weeks). Nope, Dragon Age Inquisition isn’t on that list of regrets, because I knew by July I couldn’t get that game in.

However, I did think I could play and finish both Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and LEGO Batman 3 by the end of the year. I most likely couldn’t platinum in LEGO Batman 3 as I am wont to do with LEGO games, but I could at least finish the story and the freeplay mode. And maybe have a strategy guide review for the game of all the crazy things.

At least I’m not traveling for the Christmas holidays this year, so I should be able to get some gaming time in, possibly for one or both. Yet I know I have other games I’ve already started and I need to finish for strategy guide review reasons. It’s such a #firstworldproblem, having too many games to play, and I’m well aware of that. I want to be able to do it all and remain sane. IS THAT ASKING TOO MUCH?

Any games you wish you could have played or finished this year? Help me out, I can’t be alone in this.

The Corner of Randomness: The Always Online Conundrum

December 11, 2014 By Chris Nitz Leave a Comment

DAMN IT!

DAMN IT!

There is a lot of stink over games requiring an always online connection. My first real experience with this issue was with Diablo 3 on the PC. When I first heard that this game was going to require me to be constantly connected to the Internet, I hated the idea. It felt dirty to me. I thought about the places I have lived throughout my life and realized that some of those places still don’t have a broadband connection. To play Diablo 3 under those circumstances would mean I’d just have to stare at the title screen and cry.

However, I am lucky. Since my college days, I’ve always had a broadband connection. Even when I lived in a tiny town in Missouri, I had access to DSL. Sure, DSL isn’t exactly great, but it’s a heck of a lot better than dial-up. This means that the always online requirement for games would be, somewhat, a non-issue.

This brings me to today. More and more games are starting to require a connection to the Internet. While it still sucks, like this past weekend when the PSN went down and I couldn’t play Destiny, The Crew, or even Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on my PS4, there are still plenty of upsides to this requirement. For example, in Diablo 3, my friends and I could easily jump into each other’s gamers. It was effortless. It was fun. It almost felt like a LAN party, minus all the smack talk and PC hijinks.

This past weekend, I found myself loving the always online deal. While playing The Crew, I was able to easily help other racers out, just as they were able to help me out when I asked. My friends and I jumped into a few games of Destiny thanks to this requirement. It was fun. It was effortless. It consumed, and still consumes, countless hours of my life. While connection issues still need some work as a whole, I’m finding the games I enjoy the most are those that make me stay connected to the Internet, yet provide me a great experience for having to deal with this headache.

Sure, we can hate always online games, but they are getting better. Internet connections continue to improve. Video game developers continue to make it worthwhile to be online. Love it or hate it, this is most likely where games are headed, and I can say I’ve changed my stance on it. I love the advantages it provides. It’s been enjoyable. Sure, I’ve had some days where I couldn’t play a specific game or two, such as this past Sunday, but those time are rare when I can go months without issue. Dare I say it, but I hope something like the next Assassin’s Creed or Grand Theft Auto requires me to be online so that I might wreak havoc in my friends games…cuz I am a saint like that.
