Monday Gaming Diary: Cross-Stitching Insanity

October 24, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I have recently discovered that cross-stitching is fun.

I have never been into sewing anything before, or really done anything artsy and craftsy. I admire my friends who are into it and good at it, but it’s definitely not my cup of darjeeling. A few weeks ago, however, a friend sent me an Etsy link to a cross-stitch of Cave Johnson’s (of Portal 2 fame) rant about making life take the lemons back. I thought it was hilarious and bought it, thinking it was the completed stitchery. I was emailed the pattern instead–see what happens when you don’t read?–and instantly had an “Oh, fuck” moment. I showed it to my husband, told him I wasn’t sure what to do, and he promptly hauled me to Michael’s to buy everything I would need to do it myself. He ensured me it was easy and that I would like it. I think he’s secretly hoping I get into cross-stitching and give up gaming forever since it’s so much cheaper.

I did have to look up how to start the process, since the only real stitching I had ever done before was with needlepoint with stamped patterns, but once I discovered how easy it was, I’ve had a great time with it so far.

When life gives you lemons

I’ve actually already bought another pattern from Etsy, a Mass Effect one, so it looks like this artsy craftsy phase will continue a little while longer. I may need to try to make a Crimson Omen one as well.

And speaking of Crimson Omens, I was tapped into another round of Gears of War 3 last night. A couple of friends were playing and asked me to join in, and it wasn’t until after I played one chapter with them that I found out we were playing on Insanity. I have just now started to play around with Hardcore mode, so I kind of panicked at playing Insanity at all, much less with other people. I was not prepared for really how hard it was, and even though it took us 2 hours to get through a couple of chapters, I had an absolute blast. Once we got a rhythm going and developed effective ways of communicating what we were doing, we rocked it. I can’t wait to play with at least that many people again, on Hardcore or Insanity. I wonder how many times I will beat Gears 3 in the end…and I kind of don’t care. It’s just that much fun.

I heart Delta.

Monday Gaming Diary: Deus Ex HUD Issues

October 10, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Deus Ex Human Revolution HUD

Not having a HUD sucks

I’m not going to lie; Deus Ex: Human Revolution really does push the boundaries of my comfort zone, and it doesn’t do so where I thought it would. I thought I would have the most problems with the first-person perspective, but that’s honestly the least of my problems. The stealth elements really put me on edge, and some of the “thinking-outside-the-box” really pushes me. I like that the game forces me to be creative on occasion, but at the same time, it reminds me how uncreative I am with this kind of problem solving. Once in awhile, I’ll get a revolutionary idea, but it doesn’t strike me as often as a game like DXHR requires. Couple that with my extreme lack of patience, and you get why I’m using the strategy guide.

However, none of these aforementioned reasons made me want to rage quit the game over the weekend.

In the middle of the Cloak and Daggers side missions, at the part when I need to take down a gangbanger, I kept running out of ammunition and I had no idea why. Shouldn’t I get a notification about such things? Shouldn’t I know how much ammo I have? And hey, where is my cross-hair? I kind of need that for aiming. Now that you mention it, where’s my health bar? Aren’t I supposed to have a mini-map in one corner that shows where NPCs are?

In a nutshell, my HUD had disappeared. I swore it was something I did in the settings or with a button press, so I spent a good 10-15 minutes going over and over my options in an attempt to see what I switched off. Nothing I did worked, and I was livid. I’m not good enough of a gamer to survive a FPS without a HUD, especially in those stealth zones. Not to mention, I like knowing my ammo levels at all times and I need the cross-hairs for aiming assistance. Just because I’m from Texas doesn’t mean I automatically know how to aim a gun with expert precision and direction.

I started to wonder when this happened, so I reloaded my last checkpoint. And then past saves. I finally pulled out the iPad and did a Google search, and I found nothing but bad news. It’s a glitch in the game, something that doesn’t happen often, but it requires reloading of past saves to fix. In other words, there is no fix. Oh and it occasionally corrupts past saves, forcing you to go back even further. Guess who had to do that? The one save that didn’t have the glitch was the save I used TO START MY GAME SESSION. I lost 2 hours of gameplay, and I was FURIOUS.

I quit playing that night, and when I played the next night, I swore that if it happened again to that extent, I would be done with the game. No, I don’t want to trade it in for a PS3 version. I want Square Enix and Eidos to acknowledge this problem and release a patch. I’ve seen complaints in their forums as well as the Xbox forums. This is ridiculous, and you must fix!

So far, saving after every little checkpoint with my five save files has prevented it from happening again. I will be so sad if it kills my game. So far, I’m really digging the story and the gameplay, and I really want to get this game done before November, when I will lose my soul to so much greatness.

Monday Gaming Diary: Is it the plan where we build a catapult out of plastic spoons?

October 3, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

deathspank-thongs-of-virtue-logoLast week I finished my solo-run of one of my favorite games this year–Gears of War 3–and while I know it’s high time I get back into Deus Ex, I really wanted to play something from my stack of shame over the weekend.

Since my PS3 hasn’t had an ounce of love since inFamous 2, I rifled through that stack, even though it’s definitely the smaller of the two. I settled on Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. I had heard great things about it, and many people told me I would be fine with it even though it’s technically a platformer game. In that aspect, they were right. The platforming is actually easier than the inFamous games, which makes me not want to call it a platformer at all, but that’s beside the point. After playing for two hours, I realized that the only reason why the game was even tolerable to me was because I had the strategy guide.

I’m not a fan of stealth, I really don’t like the combat, and I don’t like constantly telling Trip what to do–seriously, that’s why I never played Ico. I can see why so many people liked the game, however. It’s vibrant, the gameplay is unique, and it has a compelling story. It’s just most definitely not for me. I have so many games on my plate that I really can’t waste time on one that I don’t find fun in the first two hours, so out of the PS3 it came and onto Amazon.com it went. (I have my Enslaved strategy guide for sale there too, if you’re interested.)

After that debacle, I flipped through my PSN games to see if I had anything in there I hadn’t finished. Surely I had something that wasn’t a Final Fantasy game. And lo, I did: DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue. I loved the first game to pieces, and I bought the sequel shortly after it released but I got caught up in who knows what. The third one has been out for awhile now too, and I really want something short and light and fun, so really, what game could be better? I can’t think of anything.

I’m such an idiot for not playing Thongs of Virtue sooner. I laughed so hard within the opening seconds that I was wiping tears. The game is so ridiculous and witty, not to mention fun. I know I’m not saying anything anyone doesn’t already know; it’s more of a repeated smack to the head as to why I wasn’t playing it sooner. I cannot make the same mistake with The Baconing.

Lunch needs to get here sooner today so I can have lunch DeathSpank. Oh yes, that is my plan for the next few weeks.

Monday Gaming Diary – Oh, I’m sure everybody knows what I played last week

September 26, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Gears of War 3 controller

Yes, this is my new controller

It was all Gears of War 3 all the time, and I loved every second of it.

I had two games of Gears 3 going all week long: a co-op campaign with one of my GamesAreEvil.com colleagues and a solo campaign where I review the strategy guide. Eric and I did finish it on Saturday night, and I’m very close to finishing my solo campaign. Even though the game is over and I know how it all ends, I still can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t wait to finish my solo campaign. I can’t wait until enough of my friends buy the game so we can have a 4-player campaign. I can’t wait until my friend who finished Gears 2 with me buys the game so we can play together. I even want to try out the Arcade mode and a few games of multiplayer, something I’ve never done in my entire gaming career.

I wish I could say more about the game, but it’s going to have to wait until I write and publish my review for Gaming Angels. But I can still say this; I do not believe that Gears 3 is the game of the year, but it’s definitely one of the most fun games I’ve ever played. It’s ranking up there with Mass Effect and the inFamous franchises. Even if you never played the first two Gears games, you can still jump right into this installment and have a ton of fun.

Okay, enough Gears gushing. I’m sure I will enough in my review, my strategy guide review, and in the podcast this week that will make everyone sick of it.

So after I finish my solo campaign, it’s back to working on Adam Jensen’s story. I’m going to miss being able to plan to just shoot everything in sight, but I know the story will make up for my future frustration with the stealth. Because yeah, there will be future frustration. I’m just not very stealthy.

Monday Gaming Diary: Two Games, One Weekend

September 19, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Before your minds go too nuts over what I mean with this, I finished two games this weekend: Space Marine and Gears of War 2.  The last time I beat two games in one weekend was also with a Gears game. I sincerely doubt that will happen a third time, as the other game in my queue is Deus Ex, and there are way too many sidequests for me to have fun with for me to finish that game within a week.

Although, to be fair, it will most likely take me longer than a week to finish Gears 3 simply for the reason that I do not want to play it by myself.

I played the first Gears pretty much alone, and I wish I hadn’t. It’s partly because I know certain aspects would have been a little easier and far more enjoyable, but it’s mostly because playing with someone else makes the game ten times more fun. I really wanted to finish Gears 2 over the weekend, and my hubby had to leave town for business, so I asked another friend if he would be up to playing. This guy has been my friend for years, I loan him games all the time, we talk about what we’re playing whenever we see each other, but we’ve never played a game together. So I was a little nervous because I’m never confident in my skills and I know he is a seasoned veteran in games, particularly shooters. He hadn’t played Gears 2 in over a year, but I was still nervous he would hate playing, he would get frustrated with me, etc.

We had an absolute blast. I told him if he was interested, I would love to play Gears 3 with him whenever he got it. When he said he had a lot of fun as well, it made my day–aside from completing the game, anyway.

But whether I play with him or my husband, I want to play with someone. I don’t think I’ll play one second of it alone unless I just have to for review purposes. It is so much more fun to talk to your partner about where you are, what you’re doing, what your ammo status is, what your plan is, etc. than pray your AI partner will follow you and not die. At least in Space Marine my partners didn’t die, but then again, it’s not like they could heal me either. Not to mention, I’m not sure they ever really killed anything either.

Speaking of Space Marine, I’d love to discuss more of my experiences with it, but it’s going to have to wait until my review gets published at Gaming Angels. I will say that if you want a fun shooter, BUY SPACE MARINE. If you don’t care about Gears 3, BUY SPACE MARINE. I cannot emphasize this enough. The game completely blew me away in terms of all of my expectations. So well done, and I really want a sequel or at least another game in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The only way this will happen is if it sells. So do yourself a favor and download the demo, have lots of fun, and then go buy the game. You will not be sorry.

So what’s on the agenda for this week? Hopefully I’ll find some friends who will also buy Gears 3 on the first day so I can play that, but if not, I have plenty of Deus Ex to work on.
