Collector’s Edition Strategy Guide Giveaway! – Tekken 5 and Alan Wake

February 24, 2011 By Keri Honea 7 Comments

Want free Collector’s Editions of strategy guides? Of course you do!

Tekken 5 Strategy GuideToday I’m starting some sort of a contest, and the prizes are Collector’s Editions of Strategy Guides for Tekken 5 and Alan Wake. The Tekken 5 Strategy Guide is still shrink-wrapped in all of its hardcover glory. The publishers/writers are Future Press, and this guide has NEVER been released stateside. If you wanted it before, you had to go through BradyGames, and they did not offer a Collector’s Edition of the guide.

Alan Wake Collector's Edition Strategy GuideThe Alan Wake strategy guide in this giveaway is also a Collector’s Edition from Prima Games. Sad to say, it no long has its box that contained both the Survival Guide and the Illuminated artbook as my mail carrier decided to rip the box and smash it quick handily. Somehow, though, the books themselves remained unscathed and in pristine condition. The Survival Guide is paperback, but the Illuminated artbook is hardcover. Basically, if you’re a hardcore fan of Alan Wake, you need these in your collection. [Read more…]

Weekly Poll: Does Dragon Age live up to the hype?

February 21, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Strategy Guide Genre PollHuge apologies about the lack of writing last week. On Monday, a routine vet appointment for my beloved Chow Chow, Mufasa, turned into an all day emergency visit that did not end well. I love my dogs like I love my son, so I took the suddenness of it all really, really hard. I didn’t even contribute to Games are Evil last week, and well, I didn’t play any games either. Yeah, I was hit hard.

But I’m better now, and I’m ready to get my writing groove back on and continue my gushing over strategy guides. I have two strategy guide reviews planned for this week, AND I’m going to have a strategy guide giveaway for two different Collector’s Edition strategy guides. Has your interest returned? Let us begin…

As for the poll from two weeks ago, I’m thinking that maybe I should have combined the JRPGs and WRPGs into just RPGs. But then again, it’s interesting to see that the majority of you use guides for JRPGs. I personally find that JRPGs are more difficult in terms of gameplay just because the typical turn-based combat system creates really, really long battles. The super-secret stuff seems to be far more hidden as well than Western RPGs. I assume this is because JRPGs want you to play for a looooooong time. [Read more…]

PlayStation Blog Teases Killzone 3 Strategy Guide

February 10, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Killzone 3 Strategy GuideLook at this thing of beauty that Sony has teased us with on their PlayStation blog. If you’re looking forward to the Killzone 3 strategy guide, this visual should make you froth a little more. What makes it better is the fact that Sony has revealed some of the bonus features of the guide, all while touting the expertise of the guide writers, Future Press.

Future Press is covering every aspect of the game, from highly detailed overview maps of the single player campaign to minute details on obtaining each of the trophies and secrets. Killzone 3: The Official Guide is no less meticulous, with an extensive breakdowns of the single- and the multiplayer modes as well as useful tips and strategies for players of every skill level.

In addition, Killzone 3: The Official Guide contains lavish concept artworks depicting the development of the characters and environments of Killzone 3, accompanied by interviews with key Guerrilla designers describing the process involved. As a special bonus, purchasing the official guide gives you access to 3 Unlock Points that you can use to get a head start in unlocking abilities and weapons for your preferred career. The guide even recommends the right time to spend them!

Future Press has made us happy in terms of their high quality guides, and it looks like we’re getting graced with another one.  All of us over here are quite excited to get our hands on both the game and the guide.

The Collector’s Edition Comparison: Dead Space 2 Strategy Guide

February 10, 2011 By Keri Honea 5 Comments

Dead Space 2 Collector's Edition Strategy GuideOne [amazon-product text=”Dead Space 2 strategy guide” type=”text”]0307890090[/amazon-product] costs $19.99. The [amazon-product text=”Collectors Edition” type=”text”]0307891011[/amazon-product] costs $39.99. What justifies the $20 difference other than a deep love for the franchise? For die hard Dead Space fans (and I haven’t really met any other type of Dead Space fan), there is plenty.

Outside of the standard hard cover and additional artwork, there are 48 additional pages of extra Dead Space 2 content. It contains the expected art section with concept art, which is quite standard these days for CE strategy guides and some regular standard issue strategy guides. In addition, there is a chapter that details the creation of Isaac’s Live Action Suit along with interviews with its creators. An interview with Ian Milham, the Art Director for the Dead Space franchise, is also included and an art section dedicated to Christopher Shy’s artwork, who is the artist of the Dead Space graphic novels. As an added bonus, there is a letter from the Church of Unitology, which is only legible to the fans who have bothered learning their unique alphabet. [Read more…]

Weekly Poll: For which genre do you buy strategy guides the most?

February 7, 2011 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Epic Mickey PollAfter talking to another friend this past weekend, I may be crazy for having problems with Epic Mickey, but eh, that’s something I can live with. In other random Wii news, a friend from my Super Bowl party last night asked if I would come over and help her kids get through this one area in LEGO Harry Potter for the Wii. I got a chuckle out of it.

This week’s poll focuses on genres for guides. I now get guides for all genres, because hey, what would be the point of this site if I only bought guides from one genre? But before I purchased this domain, I primarily bought guides for JRPGs and Legend of Zelda games. For LoZ, I needed the guides just to help me figure out where to freaking go. Bosses never really flustered me, but the insane puzzles of the dungeons always made me throw controllers. [Read more…]
