BradyGames Announces Signature Series and Limited Edition Strategy Guides for Diablo III

April 25, 2012 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I was hoping there would be a strategy guide for Diablo III, and BradyGames confirmed it on Tuesday with a press release. Better yet, there will be a Limited Edition as well as a Signature Series copy.

BradyGames is pleased to unveil the official Diablo III Signature Series and Limited Edition Strategy Guides. Players and critics worldwide expect Diablo III to raise the bar for the action/RPG genre, and the official strategy guides from BradyGames will match Blizzard Entertainment’s hotly anticipated new release every terrifying step of the way.

The Diablo III strategy guides will release the same day as the Diablo III game on Tuesday, May 15th.

Signature Series Features (448 pages):

  • Receive the most ambitious coverage ever provided in a walkthrough, including coverage of every quest in all four Acts.
  • A visual encyclopedia of all 240 creatures in the game, including critical stats and detailed descriptions of special attacks, abilities, and behaviors.
  • A complete rundown of all active and passive skills for each Hero.
  • The only complete overview of the Diablo III crafting system.
  • A comprehensive exhaustive listing of all base equipment items, weapons, armor, and accessories.
  • The official resource for Blizzard’s amazing new online Diablo III commodity exchange for buying, selling, and trading items in the Auction House.

Limited Edition Features (496 pages):

  • Featuring a remarkable, one-of-a-kind sculpted metal bookmark featuring a multi-level relief of the terrifying Lord of Darkness.
  • Unique to the Limited Edition, an incredible 48-page art section features the armor sets of Diablo III from concept to execution.
  • Get all the game-tested strategies of our Signature Series packaged in a multi-layered, embossed hard cover with holographic foil and a premium finish.
  • Receive a redeemable code for a free Flash version of the strategy guide, downloadable from the BradyGames website.

Get your preorders in now, people. We hope to have a giveaway here as well, but we never know until they arrive, if we’ll even get one! These are sure to be hot commodities, if for nothing else to be collectibles for Diablo fans.

I can’t wait to see them! (And I know Blake feels the same way…)

Sad Week for Strategy Guides: Prima’s Let Down with Mortal Kombat

April 26, 2011 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

In case you haven’t heard the news, Prima Games’ Mortal Kombat strategy guide is apparently riddled with errors, inconsistencies, and useless information. To get a better idea of what is wrong with the guide, watch one disgruntled owner’s review below.

While I believe that this reviewer was a little immature with his antics–albeit, the language and funeral pyre were funny–I can’t deny that he was absolutely right with all of his points. The number of screenshots is overboard and ridiculous, and they’re to the point of not being useful to the user, especially in terms of efficiently finding what you’re looking for. The inconsistencies are also unacceptable, and what is up with the misprints for the control commands? Someone in QA obviously fell asleep at the wheel when this guide was approved for print.

Mortal Kombat Strategy Guide Problems

According to Kotaku, Prima Games will not reprint the guide due to fiscal reasons (somewhat understandable), but they will offer character cards as amends to unhappy guide owners.

“The cards will be complete with all moves, Fatalities and Babalities, and free to anyone who bought the Official Guide or the Kollector’s Edition Guide. To receive your copy of the cards, please send your name, address, and e-mail to feedback@primagames.com.”

This news has greatly saddened me for several reasons. For one, Prima Games is known for putting out high quality guides, and to let something like this slip through the cracks baffles me. Then again, I know I just ranted about their Mass Effect 2 strategy guide, so I am saddened even further. In addition, not only does this damage Prima Games’ credibility, it damages the reputation for print guides, period. Why would someone pay $20 for a risk of bad information? Not to mention, why would someone pay $20 for the promise of updated information? You can just wait for IGN Guides to produce their online guide for free and catch updates there anyway. For an industry that really wants to prove that print guides are still relevant for today’s needs, this is a huge step backwards.

Just like game developers can’t be expected to produce a triple-A game every time, the same goes for publishers with the quality of their books. The big question is if whether this trend will continue, or if this was Prima’s one bad guide of the year–like how Mass Effect 2 strategy guide was the bad egg for 2010. For both Prima’s sake and for the sake of my personal love of strategy guides, I hope this problem will be nipped in the bud for future publications.

On another personal note, a lot of the complaints about the Mortal Kombat guide echo my feelings on Prima Games’ Mass Effect 2 strategy guide. If I wasn’t such a huge Mass Effect and obsessive collector of things, I’d want to incinerate this guide as well. That also greatly saddens me.

Killzone 3 Strategy GuideLook at this thing of beauty that Sony has teased us with on their PlayStation blog. If you’re looking forward to the Killzone 3 strategy guide, this visual should make you froth a little more. What makes it better is the fact that Sony has revealed some of the bonus features of the guide, all while touting the expertise of the guide writers, Future Press.

Future Press is covering every aspect of the game, from highly detailed overview maps of the single player campaign to minute details on obtaining each of the trophies and secrets. Killzone 3: The Official Guide is no less meticulous, with an extensive breakdowns of the single- and the multiplayer modes as well as useful tips and strategies for players of every skill level.

In addition, Killzone 3: The Official Guide contains lavish concept artworks depicting the development of the characters and environments of Killzone 3, accompanied by interviews with key Guerrilla designers describing the process involved. As a special bonus, purchasing the official guide gives you access to 3 Unlock Points that you can use to get a head start in unlocking abilities and weapons for your preferred career. The guide even recommends the right time to spend them!

Future Press has made us happy in terms of their high quality guides, and it looks like we’re getting graced with another one.  All of us over here are quite excited to get our hands on both the game and the guide.

New Strategy Guides Releases: Mafia II and Kane & Lynch 2

August 20, 2010 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

Mafia II strategy guide and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days strategy guide

It’s a week of sequels for guide releases. This week, it’s all about BradyGames with their latest guides for Mafia II and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. I personally have no interest in either game (and I’ve heard really bad things about Kane & Lynch 2), but I know plenty who have just loved Mafia II. If you can leave a severed horse head in someone’s bed, then I’m all in.

BradyGames typically does good work on their guides, so if either of these interest you, they’ll more than likely be worth your time to check out.
