A Strategy Guide for your Strategy Guides
A new strategy guide is releasing TODAY, April 5, 2016 for Quantum Break. Prima Games kept this one under wraps for a long time and didn’t announce it until last week.
Only one edition will be released, a hardcover Collector’s Edition, which is currently listed at Amazon for $27.63. I wonder a bit if Prima is going the direction of Piggyback and Future Press, in that they will only release hardcover editions. This has kind of been the trend for several of the latest strategy guides.
GameStop has listed a few strategy guide releases up for preorder all through way through April for 2016. Many are expected, others were not, and yet others were a bit of a disappointment to NOT have listed. Quantum Break is one of these that I fully expected when the game releases in April. GameStop isn’t infallible, of course, and there could be others that the site doesn’t have listed that will definitely happen.
In the meantime, here is what we can expect for the start of the year:
It’s a great start for 2016, and I’m excited that the first guide will be for a LEGO game.
However, you probably have noticed that a few games are missing on this guide list in addition to Quantum Break. I’m surprised that Hitman, XCOM 2, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, and Tom Clancy’s The Division. Two are multiplayer games, which I deeply understand why they wouldn’t want to make guides for a game that constantly changes. The lack of Hitman and XCOM 2, though, are greatly surprising. Fingers crossed that they are coming, just not listed yet.
Which strategy guides are you the most excited for?
This will be my third Extra Life campaign and Chris’s fourth. In fact, it’s because of Chris that I got into this at all. The idea of staying up straight for 24 hours to play video games seemed impossible. The fact that I can’t have caffeine for medical reasons makes it sound even more impossible. But listening to him talk about his Extra Life 2012 experience, I really wanted to be a part of it, so I signed up for 2013 and joined Team GrE via Skype. I loved it so much, that for 2014, I flew to Iowa so I could be with the entire GrE team in person. And Chris and I got Zelda tattoos. It was a good time, despite the lack of sleep.
GrE is no more, so this year, for Extra Life 2015, the former Team GrE is now Team SGR. I’m not going to Iowa this year for two reasons:
So I am staying in Texas, and Ross and Chris (WHO STILL HASN’T SIGNED UP YET, YOU SLACKER) will be staying in Iowa. However, we have a new challenger on the team, a one Jen Bosier, who is traveling down to Texas from Colorado to join in Extra Life fun with me.
Our goal between the four of us is to raise $1,000. My personal goal is to raise $500. As you can see, we’re a ways away from that goal.

With the fall rush coming up, and the timing of Extra Life, this means you could get a free strategy guide for Fallout 4, Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, or Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Or hey, if you want an older guide that isn’t out of print, I will accommodate that too! But note this is within reason. No, I won’t buy the ginormous boxed sets of game guides; don’t be greedy.
I’m also working on getting codes to give away as well throughout the Extra Life day, but those will only go out to donors!

Prima Games has announced that their newest upcoming guide will be for Skylanders Superchargers, and they will print both a paperback and a collector’s edition. BradyGames printed a CE last year of Skylanders Trap Team, so it’s not that surprising that Prima is going to follow suit with yet another Skylanders CE of a strategy guide.

The Skylanders Superchargers Collector’s Edition strategy guide will also include a 32-page Skylanders comic book from IDW. I personally am not that hardcore into Skylanders to want a comic book, but I know my son definitely is, and I’m sure many others (as well as kids) would be too.
Both are already available for preorder from Amazon and other retailers. The price difference between the two is only $9, which is far less than the typical spread between paperback strategy guides and their CE counterparts.
Our dearth of strategy guides is about to come to an end, and the first one to hit our hot little hands will be the Metal Gear Solid V strategy guide. Piggyback is handling this one, and they sent me a few teaser photos. If the content is as amazing as the book’s presentation, Metal Gear fans are in for a treat.
