Kickstarter Campaign for Print Strategy Guides of Indie Games

August 13, 2013 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Off Base KickstarterOff Base Productions, the strategy guide/web company who has written several strategy guides for BradyGames, has posted a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for publishing print strategy guides for indie games. One disadvantage indie games have with not being triple-A games is that the only way they will ever get a strategy guide is via online services, such as GameFAQs or even Prima Games‘ latest trend of offering free strategies online.

While most people prefer looking up tips and tricks online, Off Base has feelings about print strategy guides quite similar to my own:

A strategy guide is meant to be a companion for the reader, helping them to advance when they’re stuck, plan out the progression of their character, or point out interesting areas ripe for exploration. It’s your field guide for a multiverse of experiences. But in the world of YouTube and Wikipedia, the printed strategy guide has become no more than an upsell statistic for game store clerks at worst, or a throwaway object never to be looked at again when the game is over at best.

The staff behind this project wants to create a guide that works against this paradigm by creating a high-end, highly collectable object akin more to a well-crafted novel or a premium graphic novel – something that is a joy to hold, flip through, read, and proudly display on your shelf. We want to publish a piece that supports the experience of a game while reflecting its creative team’s efforts and talent.

Their first foray into self-publishing a print guide is for Mercenary Kings, an upcoming 2D action game on Steam that quite honestly, I haven’t heard of until now.

I would love to see this project succeed. In fact, I am going contribute to this campaign on behalf of SGR to show my ever undying support and love of print strategy guides. I may never buy this game, but I want to see Off Base succeed here so that more print guides for indie games can be made. I can’t imagine a better way to support further development of indie games than to see print strategy guides for them.

Legend of Zelda Hardcover Strategy Guide Box Set

July 17, 2013 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

The Legend of Zelda hardcover box setYes, you read that title correctly. In other words, it’s proof that Prima Games hates me and doesn’t want me to be happy or have money.

Just in time for San Diego Comic Con, Prima Games announced via their Facebook Page that not only does this insane creation exist, but they will be giving away one set for free at SDCC. I have a feeling the guys and girls at Prima are suddenly so happy I’m not able to go to SDCC this year, as I would be stalking this set all four days.

Of course they’re selling the Legend of Zelda box set too, and Amazon has a nice preorder discount of $152.99 (regular price $179.99). I’d be lying if I said I was debating it and the debate was losing.

The hardcover strategy guide set includes guides for Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Ocarina of Time 3D. I already own the hardover guides for Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, but for the chance to own the hardcovers of the rest, I’d risk owning duplicates any day.

I know I rage quit Ocarina of Time 3D and sold Twilight Princess, not to mention, I no longer own a Wii to even play Skyward Sword, but it’s hard to argue this with a collector, especially a collector for Zelda guides. Besides, I may own a Wii U soon so I could, in theory, get Skyward Sword, and since I own a GameCube, I really could get Twilight Princess again.

DON’T JUDGE.

Saints Row IV Strategy Guide Cover Revealed

July 2, 2013 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

BradyGames has shown off their rather GORGEOUS cover for the upcoming Saints Row IV strategy guide on their Facebook page. No sign of a collector’s edition yet, at least not on their FB page, but I’m rather fine with the paperback edition as it is.

Saints Row IV Strategy Guide Cover Reveal

Funniest comment I have seen thus far on the FB page is from strategy guide writer Doug Walsh, who commented that Tony Stark would make an awesome President. I’m never going to be able to look at this cover again without thinking that this is Tony Stark.

At the same time, I can’t help but agree with Mr. Walsh; Mr. Stark would make a pretty awesome President.

The Last of Us Strategy Guide Covers and CE Bonuses Confirmed

May 21, 2013 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

The Last of Us strategy guidesAs The Last of Us rapidly nears its release date, BradyGames has confirmed the final covers for their strategy guides as well as the bonuses for the Collector’s Edition.

The CE contains every detail that the paperback edition has within, but it seems that the CE has a bit more information on the characters and has a supplemental story analysis. In addition, the hardcover edition comes with a fairly nice firefly keychain. It’s nice enough to make me want to take it out of the packaging before shipping it to my reviewer (but I won’t, I swear).

The Last of Us and its corresponding guides release on June 14th. And yes, we will be sponsoring a strategy guide giveaway with BradyGames.

Prima Games Announces Legendary Skyrim Strategy Guide

May 16, 2013 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

SkyrimLegendaryIn case you missed out on the first Collector’s Edition strategy guide for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Prima Games has a new CE that will blow your Skyrim-loving mind away. They call it the “Legendary Edition,” and it looks to be massive to legendary proportions indeed.

This updated edition now includes ALL of the Skyrim DLC, which has boosted this beast to over 1,100 pages. Prima has even created both a paperback edition and a CE, the latter of which includes a stylish hard cover, ribbon bookmarks, and a panoramic poster.

From Prima’s Facebook page, they boast that it’s “time to reinforce your bookshelf.” I’m quite certain if I introduced this beast to my strategy guide bookshelf, it will burst into tears unless I relegate it to the bottom shelf. And even then, I might need to add extra support to the floor, since my guides are kept upstairs.

I haven’t ventured into Skyrim yet, even though I own the game, as I’ve been afraid to. This book only reinforces my fear.

The Legendary Edition of the Skyrim strategy guide will be available on June 4, 2013.
