I EFFING HATE HELICOPTERS

January 14, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I used the above phrase in both Twitter and on my GamerDNA game post today, and for those of you who have already played Uncharted 2, you most likely know exactly what I’m talking about.

I have not had great luck with helicopters in this game. The first helicopter nearly made me quit the game when it started to shoot down the building Chloe and I were in. It was hard enough staying alive with normal soldiers shooting at me, but now you have to go shoot down the foundation? Really? And for some reason, I had a damn hard time staying alive long enough to trigger the cut scene to jump to the next building as my building falls. I either fell out, was shot, or accidentally pushed Chloe out. I could not figure out what to do. I knew it had to be something stupid, and from the lingo in the guide and GameFAQs, I knew it was just a matter of staying alive long enough for the cut scene to trigger. But the question was how to DO that. I probably replayed that scene close to ten times before I finally stayed alive the one extra second that I needed. I’m not lying when I say one second. I talked to a colleague about it, and he was baffled at my difficulties. Who knows what happened, but I’m willing to bet I made something harder on myself than I needed to, although I have no idea what.

Then today, I reached the glorious train ride. I could not for the life of me defeat that helicopter. I shamefully had to crank down the difficulty level until I could finally shoot the damn thing and its missiles down. I played that section about as many times as I did the falling building. I’m going to develop some unnatural hatred or fear toward helicopters in real life, I’m afraid. At the very least, I will sob if I see another one in this game. Considering I’m just over halfway through, chances are great one will come back.

And before you ask, yes, I have cranked the difficulty back up.

Quick Word on Shooters

January 9, 2010 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

Uncharted 2 is really my first shooter game to play and while I am having a blast with it, I really, really, REALLY do not enjoy the concept of running out of ammunition. I am totally aware that it is relatively easy to find more out there, but I don’t like running out while under fire and searching for guns. I’m not saying that I’m quitting, but UC2 may be my first and last shooter.

I’m most likely going to be searching for a “partner” here to fill in my shooter gaps. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll get better and it won’t stress me out as much.

Btw, I’d like to thank I_Nero_I for friending me on PSN. Sorry it didn’t work on the Xbox, but I’ll still seek you out there. 🙂

Now Calling Future Press re: Bayonetta

January 8, 2010 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

Okay, this worked for BradyGames, so I’m going to try to tap into the same magic…

Any readers out there who work for Future Press or know someone who does, can you please tell me if the guide for Bayonetta has been canceled? Amazon has today listed as the release day, and yet it’s suddenly out of print. I don’t know why they just can’t admit that something has been canceled, but I would like further confirmation if possible.

It also looks like IGN Guides will not be putting out a guide either, so I’m wondering if this game is crazy easy. Eh, I don’t care if it is. It looks like it’s so much fun to play.

UPDATE: Future Press IS releasing a strategy guide, but they cannot sell it in North America due to BradyGames’ licensing rights. Europeans, you are quite lucky indeed.

Dragon Age on hold, and I’m back to Uncharted 2

January 7, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I am NOT quitting Dragon Age. At least, I don’t plan on quitting Dragon Age. I just hate the console controls for it, and I think it would be far more fun to play on the PC. I don’t feel like I have control of my party, and since you have to use more than just your character, it would be far easier to do this if 1) I had a different viewpoint of the game and 2) I had a mouse. What do you know? The PC suffices to both. I’m not going to buy another copy by any means, but a friend said he would loan me his copy when he finished. I like the story way too much to completely quit it, and the guide works for the PC version as well, so I win all around.

In the meantime, I have Uncharted 2 back in my sights. I played a little this week–Shawn being out of town really screws up my gaming schedule–and it took me a few seconds to refamiliarize myself with the controls. Once I did, I was instantly captivated with how great this game is. I had forgotten, silly me.

As for news on a Bayonetta guide, Amazon.com says that Future Press will be releasing one, but yet again I have no confirmation from the publisher itself. I’m on Amazon’s e-mail alert list for if and when the guide releases, but I don’t have very high hopes for it. We shall see.

Top Gaming Moments of 2009

January 4, 2010 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

Normally I write about my top 5 gaming moments, but this year I could only think of four, since I spent most of the year finishing games from 2008. Hopefully that won’t happen this year. But without further ado, here we go!

1. Revisiting Italy – Assassin’s Creed 2

Assassin's Creed 2

I wasn’t a huge fan of the gameplay in AC2, but I will most likely NEVER experience a game like this one ever again. As I’ve said before, I went to Italy for my __th birthday a couple of years ago and Florence and Venice were two of the stops we made. Early on in the game, I was running Ezio all over the rooftops, and when I came to the Santa Croce Piazza, I froze and my mouth dropped open. I had a complete flashback of visiting that piazza two years before. I remembered the statues that are there now, the cafe where we ate lunch, and the little chocolate shop where we all feasted on some pieces of heaven. Not only that, I could see where all those things were in the game. Of course they weren’t actually there, considering that the game’s setting is Renaissance Italy, but I could see exactly where they all will be, or actually are to this day. It sent chills down my spine, and I had similar feelings about Venice while running around through all the bridges, and I know I’ll never experience anything like that in a game again.

2. Is this a game or a live action movie? – Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2

I’ve only played a couple of hours of Uncharted 2, but it only took five seconds for my jaw to drop at the wonder and beauty of the game. I nearly died a few times in this opening sequence because I had no idea that the cut scene was over and it was my turn to play. I have never seen such seamless cut scenes or such brilliant graphics that made me not only feel like I was playing an action movie, but I often forgot that I wasn’t simply watching one.

3. HOLY BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES! (the voices, anyway) – Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum for several reasons, the main one being that I just couldn’t see myself fitting it into my already tight schedule. However, the demo itself blew me away in terms of the voice-acting. When I heard Kevin Conroy’s voice emanate from Batman’s lips, and then heard Mark Hamill’s patented Joker laugh…I nearly had a nerdgasm on the couch. You can imagine what happened next when I heard Harley Quinn’s voice. It made me even more pleased to hear that this is the best Batman game ever made, so it’s wonderful that the best voices for Batman and Joker were a part of it.

4. The inFamous Ending – inFamous

inFamous - Kessler

I fully admit that I was blown away by Kessler’s true identity at the end of inFamous. I never once saw that coming, not even when Kessler sobbed that he loved Trish. I actually thought he was Trish’s or Cole’s father, and not, well, for spoiler’s sake I won’t say who. I don’t care if I’m the only one who was clueless up until the end. It was such a thrilling ending to a thrilling game.

Now I just have to get through playing it evil before the sequel comes out…
