Outlook not looking great for Assassin’s Creed 2 Guide

November 21, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

It’s taken me a few times to play to really get into this game, but now I really enjoy it. I’m not a fan of the controls, but eh, not much I can do about that. My favorite part so far, is not the story, but how it takes my breath away when I stumble into an area I recognize from my trip to Italy. And no, I don’t mean the obvious landmarks like the Duomo, but certain piazzas and palazzos we walked through or stopped for meals. Sometimes it’s kind of hard to do so, when I’m getting chased and what not, but when I can take the time, I walk slowly through the areas, taking everything in.

The guide however…sigh. Within the first hour of gameplay, I found problems with the guide, mainly in lack of maps. One of the early memories required a race, and it would have been nice if the recommended route was mapped out, instead of simply telling me, find a door with an archway down the alley…. Okay, it’s a race here, I don’t have time to keep looking down each alley. In lieu of maps, it offers screenshots of particular areas to look for. They really are not helpful. In the Jail Break memory, I finally tossed the guide and its vague directions and went the route I felt like, and of course, I did just fine.

This is quite disappointing so early in the review. If people wanted vague directions without any maps, there’s always GameFAQs, and at least there, those users usually provide more description in their directions.

I need to stop listening to podcasts

November 12, 2009 By Keri Honea 1 Comment

No seriously, I do.

I listen to gaming podcasts during my morning bike rides. The constant talk helps take my mind off of the grueling path I force myself to go on almost every morning and it keeps me up to speed in the gaming world (not that my jobs with Kombo.com don’t do that as it is, but it’s nice to hear other opinions). Sometimes, the guys on the podcasts will go all fanboy for a game, and the talk gets me excited about it and I run out and buy it. So far, the podcast-sucker tactic has been successful. It was what made me give inFamous a chance, buy Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and more recently, pick up Uncharted 2.

Well, saying that about Uncharted 2 is a lie. As of today, thanks to the GameInformer podcast, I picked up Dragon Age: Origins today.

I am well aware of how weak this makes me, especially when considering that DA’s presence at E3 this year did not impress me at all. I edited quite a few frothing previews from that showing, and I didn’t get what they were all excited about. The story always intrigued me, but the game’s presentation seemed to be less than desirable. But I couldn’t help myself hearing three guys go all Lord of the Rings nerdy on the podcast about how great DA was. Then they compared it to Knights of the Old Republic and I was sold. That was the game that if I had had an Xbox back then, that game would have been on my shelf. I loved reading everything about it and lamented each day it didn’t come to the PS2.

So how in the world am I going to handle this game when I haven’t even found time to play Uncharted 2 in over a week and Assassin’s Creed 2 comes out next week? I have no idea, but I don’t want to get bogged down in the details. I mapped out which games I really want that are coming out next year (after next week, this year will be done for me, game-wise) and I think I have plenty of time to do it all. I don’t have another game on my list until February (And then two will release! Arrrgh!) so I think that’s enough time to complete 2 action games and get one RPG well underway.

Don’t ask how Final Fantasy X will enter in this mix, because I don’t have an answer. As long as I finish it before Final Fantasy XIII comes out, I’ll be happy. And if I don’t, I think Final Fantasy XIII will help me get over it.

Stack Fresh from Future Press

September 23, 2009 By Keri Honea 2 Comments

I am constantly trying to get guide writer interviews, and I guess these creatures do not enjoy talking to strangers or my e-mails disappear in a void. But when I contacted Future Press about interviewing their writers for the inFamous Guide, I finally received a response. I was told that they are too busy at this time to conduct an interview, and I’m not disappointed about that, because hey at least I was written back. But then the media contact surprised me by reading my review and asking me to review what he considered far better guides. I gave him my address and thanked him, but I never really expected anything to come from it.

Then yesterday, a huge stack of guides arrived at my front door. I have been floored ever since. Future Press is a German publisher, so most of their guides are official from Europe, and a publisher in the States occasionally picks them up to adapt as their own. Like inFamous. In other words, all of these guides I received have US counterparts, so I’m intrigued to how they compare to some of the guides I already own.

The stack includes Final Fantasy III (DS), Tekken 5, God of War II, Killzone 2, and Bionic Commando. I cannot wait to review these and I cannot thank Future Press enough for this opportunity.

The Last Remnant is getting Post-it Treatment

September 1, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

What do I mean by post-it treatment? I mean that I’m finding so many discrepancies and problems between the game and the guide that I’m slapping post-it notes on the pages so I can remember to write about them later.

None of the discrepancies are earth shattering in terms of story completion, but it would be nice to know ahead of time when a freaking mini-boss is lurking around a corner. Oh and it has one attack that will wipe out both of your unions in a hurry. Of course where was my last save point? A couple of hours back. That mistake was my fault to be sure, but the lack of a mini-boss mention in a guide is inexcusable.

If I have so many post-it notes in the book that it alters its shape, I may have to take a picture of the final product when reviewing it.

Final Fantasizing Myself

August 4, 2009 By Keri Honea Leave a Comment

I meant to blog last night after playing inFamous, but I ended up playing a few hours after I meant to stop because I kept saying, “One more mission. Oh wait, there’s another mission. Well, since I’m already here, I might as well do this mission.”

To help me further lose sleep, I’ve decided to pick up Final Fantasy X. I first played this game many years ago when a friend–who got me into gaming–insisted that I play the best damn game ever. She loaned it to me and I couldn’t stand it. The story was interesting, but I hated the gameplay. I gave it back to her after only logging a few hours.

However, I always kept my game saves on my memory card. When the game became a Greatest Hit and therefore dropped in price, I purchased it, thinking maybe I would play it again. (The real reason was because I had save points right before some gorgeous cut-scenes and I liked watching them.) Since I’ve now seen the light and enjoy turn-based games, I knew it was time to give it another chance.

And yep, it’s definitely the right time. I don’t know how I found it so annoying back then; I’ve played far slower turn-based games and loved them. It’s funny to see how your gaming tastes evolve.

So as for Final Fantasy VII, I’m not going to give it up. It’s just going to be a travel game. I don’t have as much motivation to finish it because I already know the story thanks to Crisis Core. I should have played the games in proper release order, but when I was playing CC, I was still in my anti-turn-based game phase. Oh well. No use regretting what you can’t change!
